VOLCOM STONE'S RUMBLEFISH SURF SERIES, PRAIA MATOSINHOS, PORTO

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 November, 2009 : - - This was the first time the Rumblefish VQS visited the North of Portugal and it got a taste of what’s like to be a Northern surfer. Days before it arrived we were crossing our fingers as all signs where going on red alert for the biggest storm of the year. When we got to the beach Saturday morning it looked like the gates of the Winter hell were open: freezing cold, howling South winds, raining cats and dogs and big stormy surf. Anyway five dozens of brave surfers, a mix of tiny nine year old groms to forty year old farts, were there ready to go but we decided to cancel it for the day and go for some hot food and a poker afternoon. Yours truly was taken to the ropes and got a nice spanking. The kids seem to have developed some weird poker skills nowadays.

Although Sunday morning’s weather was better, the waves were even bigger than the day before, a new swell arrived and kept getting bigger and bigger. So we set up the tent close to the harbour where’s a little more protected and got it going. We shared that side of the beach with all the Sunday morning soccer teams and fishermen, a classic North beach landscape: football, surfing and fishing.

The surf was difficult with closeouts left and right but the kids went nuts. The smaller ones trying to push for the outside and surfing whatever they could find. Closeuts, reforms and lots of whitewater. Despite the difficult conditions there were some spectacular moves. Our boy Alex Botelho was probably the standout hitting thick lips to a point that bets were going on at the beach about if he would break his boards or not. The winner of the Groms division, 12 year old Pedro Alcobia was another standout, consistently going for broke at the waves on the outside. So when the horn screamed for the last time everybody went for the prize ceremony at Picaba bar with Bizuka as the Master of Puppets throwing Volcom giveways and keeping the kids stoked.

Thanks to everyone that attended with a special thank you to Sergio of Algarve surf school who travelled 600 km to help, same for João Arroja of Quebra Coco surf shop and Jason Griffith, Miguel Osório, Eurico Gonçalves from Figueira da Foz, João Carlos and Matosinhos Surf Center for the support. Thanks to Picaba bar for the food. Last but not the least a big thank you to Patrick and the 552G staff, you rule.

Thanks also to our industry friends for the extra prizes : Electric , Aerial7 and Seventyone percent.
Here are the hardcore Northern surfers who won the right to be at the Eur VQS Finals at Anglet next 23rd and 24th of April 2010.
