World title races, board theft, solid swell and make or break airs at Hossegor in the Quiksilver Pro France
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 December, 2009 : - - Hossegor is an awesome spectator venue, with the wave ending in knee high water on the edge of the sand. Huge crowds show up to watch the best in the world mix it up with the local wild cards on a wave that promises a bit of everything. Round 1 kicked off with Kelly Slater almost missing his heat but he still managed to win even though he was standing on the beach when it started.
Round 2 is make or break time. Win and you’ve got at least an equal 17th. Lose and it’s a 33rd place finish for you. Things can be super close and the difference often comes down to fractions of a point. Round 3 is when the victors from the first heats come back into the mix. Dane Reynolds blew everyone away with the highest heat score of the whole event, landing smooth airs and spins at will. CJ Hobgood had his entire quiver stolen the night before the contest started and after fighting through the first round on borrowed equipment he’d secured some boards more suited to his style.
Wild card entrant and local Patrick Bevan wasn’t fazed when he squared up against points leader Joel Parkinson. Parko’s defeat left the door open for Mick Fanning to claim pole position. Kelly could also smell the blood in the water and wasted no time dispatching Joan Duru, another young local. Jordy was still in the mix and keeping the local flag flying high. The quarterfinals were intense, with the highlight being young Patrick Bevan’s victory over Bobby Martinez guaranteeing him a semi final slot and the biggest result of his career. Kelly came up short against Euro Force star Tiago Pires, who was determined to progress as far as possible in front of the (sort of ) home crowd. Obviously seeing the Portuguese flags waving on the beach gave him the extra boost he needed to claim his second victory over Slater. With KS gone Mick knew the ratings lead was in his grasp and blasted through to the semi. Bede Durbridge put in a classic performance to stop Bevan cold in the first semi and moved himself back into the top 5 on the leaderboard. Mick wasn’t gonna let the opportunity go to waste and flattened Tiago. The final held great portent for the CT standings and both Bede and Mick were going flat out. Mick had the edge though claiming another victory and giving his campaign for a second world title a big boost.
