Arnette Australian Junior Surfing Titles Enters the Serious Stage with Finalists and Semi Finals being Decided

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 December, 2009 : - - With the Arnette Australian Junior Surfing Titles now into day 4, competition is hotting up across both individual and schools divisions as quarter finalists through to finalists are decided across most divisions. Schools competing in the prestigious Mark Richards Shield across under 19 and under 16 divisions have decided their finalists.

Woolgoolga Secondary High School in Coff’s Harbour NSW, represented by Alex Maniatis and Justin Turk again dominated this morning and in the Blue Ribbon under 19 Boys MR Shield they will face a much anticipated clash with Victoria’s Wonthaggi Secondary College, represented by Mitch Baker and Tom Cole.

The under 19 Girls MR Shield will see Phillip Island  Victorian pair Nikki Van Dijk and India Payne from Newhaven College  take on West Australia’s Bronte and Laura Macaulay from Margaret River Secondary High School. Chasing bragging rights as Australia’s top school of surfing when these finalists hit the water, most likely on Friday, will see all surfers fiercely compete for the pride of the school.

The two Victorian schools of Wonthaggi and Newhaven are actually neighbouring schools in Victoria , drawing their representatives from the surf rich region of Phillip Island and if both schools can win their finals it would be a first for Victoria to win both divisions and a first for Phillip Island. India Payne from Newhaven College is confident after today’s hard fought victory.

“That was really tough today with strong winds and waves breaking all over the place but we made it through and now we’re fully focused on the final – we’d love to win and then cheer on the Wonthaggi guys as well!” The individual Australian Title divisions were also back in the water today with repechage rounds run across all divisions.

Tomorrow will see an intensive day of under 18 and 16 surfing with successful surfers from today’s repechage rounds joining the winners from round one to decide quarter and semi finalists across all divisions.

The building 1m swell this afternoon looks set to maintain right through to Saturdays final day
