12 - 13 December 2009

The Roxy Wahine Cup has become one of the most popular contests on the South African surfing calendar

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 December, 2009 : - - Durban -- The Roxy Wahine Cup has become one of the most popular contests on the South African surfing calendar, attracting female surfers of all ages from across the country to this unique event.

As South Africa's premier stand-alone female surfing competition, the Roxy Wahine Cup has become more than just a surf contest, and is now seen as a great excuse for South Africa's surfing ladies to get together and hang out on the pristine grass banks overlooking Suncoast Beach.

"The venue for the Roxy Wahine Cup is pretty sweet," says 2008 Open Champion Tarryn Chudleigh (Kommetjie). "It's cool to hang out on the grass in the shade of the umbrellas, and there is always such a good vibe. Even some of the boys come and hang out and it's one of my favourite contests."

With surfers flying in from as far afield as Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and East London, the Roxy Wahine Cup has played a massive role in the growth of women's surfing in South Africa. Former World Championship Tour stalwart and former Roxy Wahine Cup winner Heather Clark (Port Shepstone) is one of the first to sing the praises of the event.

"The Roxy Wahine Cup is a great event," says Clark. "It gets all the girls together, from the older girls who have been surfing for a while to the young groms who are all ripping to the novice girls who have the opportunity to get their first taste of surfing a big event. We get to hang out together and see who the next lot of up-and-coming girls are. It's just an amazing event and definitely the biggest event on the girls' calendar. It's a fun and exciting way to end the year and has done wonders for women's surfing in South Africa."

Current world number nine Rosanne Hodge (East London) agrees with Clark and is disappointed that she will not be able to contest this year's event due to commitments on the World Championship Tour in Hawaii. "I love surfing the Roxy Wahine Cup," says Hodge (22). "I feel comfortable there and having all the girls on the beach or in the water pushes my surfing and I am really sad that I'll be missing the Roxy this year."

With R22500 in prize money up for grabs in the five main divisions - ranging from U14 to Open - and a coveted year-long Roxy sponsorship going to the winner of the Novice division, the Roxy Wahine Cup offers the perfect mix of fun and serious competition. Due to take place at Durban's Suncoast Beach on the weekend of 12-13 December 2009, this years Roxy Wahine Cup marks the 11th edition of this iconic event. The contest will see prizes awarded in the Novice, U14, U16, U20 and Open divisions and always enjoys a festive atmosphere on the grass banks overlooking the beach.

The premier Open division will be punctuated by some fierce competition, and with the likes of defending champion Tarryn Chudleigh (Kommetjie), Tammy-Lee Smith (Ballito), Kirsty Delport (Durban), Chantelle Rautenbach (Melkbosstrand), Sarah Baum (Warner Beach), Bianca Buitendag (George) and Stacey Guy (Cape Town) all competing, the 2009 edition of the Roxy Wahine Cup promises to be an exciting contest.

Another exciting aspect of the Roxy Wahine Cup is the Roxy Learn to Surf program which will be run over the same weekend as the contest. Lessons will be run on Saturday and Sunday from 09.00am to 11.00am, and 11.30am to 1.30pm with professional surfing coach Alan Wallace. Bookings can be made by calling Wallace on 076 877 5143.

The Roxy Wahine Cup is a Surfing South Africa sanctioned event. Surfing South Africa is the governing body for the sport and is affiliated to the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee and the International Surfing association.

Roxy would like to thank the following sponsors for facilitating the organization of this event: Virgin Mobile, Resolution, Durban City, SuperSport, Suncoast Entertainment World, Saltwater Girl Magazine, Red Bull, Nivea and Clean & Clear. During the Roxy Wahine Cup, Saltwater Girl’s website will host a gallery of lifestyle and action images as well as a blog on the event swg.co.za.

As a fitting opener to the 2009 Roxy Wahine Cup, Friday 11 December will see the Rock On Summer Concert taking place at Suncoast featuring The Otherwise, Cassette, Stealing Love Jones and Prime Circle. The concert, which is presented by Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World and Boudoir Live Productions, will begin at 7.00 pm. Tickets are available at Computicket, but all Roxy Wahine Cup entrants with arm bands will be allowed free entry.
