Andrew Crockett's book set to go
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 December, 2009 : - - This Saturday surfers from around the country will be heading for the Australian surf capital of Torquay to the iconic WATERMARKS gallery of acclaimed Australian surf photographer Barrie Sutherland for the launch of Andrew Crockett's highly anticipated Switch-Foot II. When author and photographer Andrew Crockett published his first book, Switch-Foot in 2005, it received wonderful reviews from surf culture commentators and boardriders alike and quickly became a collectors item - even earning Andrew a nomination to the Surfing Hall of Fame. Andrew who will be there to sign copies and chat with his many friends and fans is delighted with the response to his bringing out a sequel. ‘I cannot believe the enthusiasm from the public for this new book, it is a real stoke to know that the public even know it exists. I thought it was underground.
The first book had 50 contributors and was 210 pages long, Switch-Foot II is 368 pages and there are 90 contributors. It is massive and I am very appreciative of all the contributors, especially the older folk, who have allowed me to interview them and run their classic photographs.’ Four years in the making, Switch-Foot II is the sequel to the award-winning first title, with 368 pages and 1000 images and contains over 90 contributors from around the world; many of them are ‘legends’ of surfing. The sequel captures a strong surf core in the historical photographs from the 1960’s and 1970’s with most of Australia’s leading surfing photographers from that era supporting the Switch-Foot books. In the era of the ever-changing face of surf and the competitive, sponsor-driven commercialism of the sport, Switch-Foot has a unique place in the surfing world, the ethos is about everything to do with the ‘non -competitive’ side of surfing which one would hope will never die.
According Barrie, SWITCHFOOT II is an amazing book that every surfer should have on their shelf. "Andrew's new book is packed full of wonderful stories, photographs, interviews and art including a rare and marvellous interview with Peter Troy (deceased), surfing's much travelled surfer and adventurer," he says.
Professional surfer and environmental activist David Rastovich describes Switch-Foot II as ''turning through the book is like sitting under a wise old tree that gives shade and shelter for the soul, and ripe fruit for thought.''
The books will go on sale at the launch and signed copies are available.
