Presented by Virgin Mobile

Suncoast Beach Durban
12 - 13 December 2009

South Africa's Best Prepare to Contest Roxy Wahine Cup presented by Virgin Mobile in association with Resolution

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 December, 2009 : - - Durban -- With just two days to go until the Roxy Wahine Cup, South Africa's premier stand-alone female surfing competition, takes place at Suncoast Beach in Durban, South Africa's top female surfers are all raring to go. At stake is R22,500 in prize money which will go to the top girls in five divisions ranging from novice to the premier Open Division.

Due to take place at Suncoast Beach in KZN this weekend (12 and 13 December), the main focus will be on the premier Open division and the surfers in contention for the title range in age and experience from the more established surfers such as Tasha Mentasti (Durban), Tammy-Lee Smith (Ballito) and Stacey Guy (Melkbosstrand) to South African junior surfing team members Sarah Baum (Durban), Bianca Buitendag (George), Tanika Hoffman (Kommetjie) and Heidi Palmboom (Bluff), who are all in their teens.

Other surfers in contention include defending champion Tarryn Chudleigh (Kommetjie), Kirsty Delport (Durban), Chantelle Rautenbach (Melkbosstrand) and current SA Under 18 Champion Alice McGregor (East London).

Sadly South African surfing icon and former 2008 Roxy Wahine winner Heather Clark (Port Shepstone) will not be competing as she is still recovering from a car accident in which she sustained severe injuries in October. In a gesture of goodwill, Roxy will be undertaking fundraising efforts on behalf of Clark at the Roxy Wahine Cup to help her cover her huge medical bills. Clark is hoping she will be strong enough to attend the Roxy Wahine Cup on Sunday and support the girls competing.

Roxy has played a major role in the development of women's surfing in South Africa, focussing on getting girls off the beach and into the water, and two of the initiatives of the Roxy Wahine Cup are focussed primarily on this. The first is the Roxy Learn to Surf program which will be run on Saturday and Sunday from 09.00am to 11.00am, and 11.30am to 1.30pm with professional surfing coach Alan Wallace.

Bookings can be made by calling Wallace on 076 877 5143. The second aspect is the Novice Division which is open to any girls that have never surfed in a contest before, and is a great conduit from recreational to competitive surfing by awarding the division winner with a one year sponsorship by Roxy. Current national junior team member and former Roxy Wahine Cup Open Division runner-up Sarah Baum (15) is a product of the Novice Division.

"I surfed my first Roxy Wahine Cup at age 8 and got though a few heats in the Novice division against girls that were twice my age," says Baum. "I remember the surf was pounding and I won Surfer of the Contest which I guess was the start of my competitive career. Since then I have always looked forward to the Roxy Wahine Cup each year. The vibe on the beach is cool and Roxy go all out to make this a brilliant event. And the prize money is huge!"

The Roxy Wahine Cup is a Surfing South Africa sanctioned event. Surfing South Africa is the governing body for the sport and is affiliated to the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee and the International Surfing association.

Roxy would like to thank the following sponsors for facilitating the organization of this event: Virgin Mobile, Resolution, Durban City, SuperSport, Suncoast Entertainment World, Saltwater Girl Magazine, Red Bull, Nivea and Clean & Clear. During the Roxy Wahine Cup, Saltwater Girl’s website will host a gallery of lifestyle and action images as well as a blog on the event swg.co.za

As a fitting opener to the 2009 Roxy Wahine Cup, Friday 11 December will see the Rock On Summer Concert taking place at Suncoast featuring The Otherwise, Cassette, Stealing Love Jones and Prime Circle. The concert, which is presented by Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World and Boudoir Live Productions, will begin at 7.00 pm. Tickets are available at Computicket, but all Roxy Wahine Cup entrants with arm bands will be allowed free entry.
