Big Wave News

Jaunts to Maui, Solomon Islands keep his blood pumping

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 December, 2009 : - - Jamie Mitchell says it was big ... but it could have been bigger. The Currumbin big-wave hunter has just returned from a surfing safari to Hawaii and the Solomon Islands, during which time he took on monsters like the one above at the famed and feared Peahi break on the Hawaiian island of Maui... It wasn't quite as big as everyone expected but it was definitely one of the biggest swells from the last decade for sure,' he said.

The 32-year-old, who has won eight consecutive Molokai to Oahu paddleboard races when he is not chasing big waves, said the average wave size in Hawaii was 15m. "To be honest, I think a bunch of people were a tad disappointed it was that size," he said. When asked if he wished it was bigger, Mitchell said: "Of course. If you're chasing big waves you would always like it to be a bit bigger for a challenge, but in saying that it was still huge."

Mitchell said Peahi was one of the 'most scary dangerous' surfing breaks in the world. "It's daunting, it's exciting, it's scary -- it's all that at the same time," he said. Mitchell saw how quickly conditions could turn deadly when a mate was held down by water from three waves and almost drowned.

"The look on his face is something I never want to see again -- if you were not on your game, things can go south real quick," he said. "The first day there were four jet-skis that went up on the rocks and numerous boards."
