Taj's Small Fries
Yallingup, Western Australia 28 - 30 January 2010
More than 100 groms expected for the contest
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 January, 2010 : - - Five years ago, professional surfer Taj Burrow hosted his first ever Taj’s Small Fries grommet surfing event at his home beach of Yallingup in Western Australia. In January 2010, the event will return for the fifth consecutive year and has become one of the most anticipated junior surfing competitions in the country.
With 2010 marking an important anniversary for the event, its anticipated that over 100 young surfers will line up in the 16/U Boy’s, 16/U Girl’s, 14/U Boy’s, 14/U Girl’s and 12/U boy’s divisions over a three day window from January 28-30 in the states wave rich south west region.
Fresh from a season ending ASP world tour victory in Hawaii against Kelly Slater, Burrow has returned home and will remain there until the Small Fries event at the end of January. “Five years has gone past pretty damn fast,” said Burrow. “It seems like every year we just see more and more kids turning up to the event from all over Australia, not just the west side.”
“The level has got way better as well, it’s awesome to see all the little groms just flaring around Yallingup for the weekend.” Surfing West Australia events manager Justin Majeks said the fifth Annual Small Fries event is shaping up as one of the best yet. “It seems like every year we get such perfect little waves for Taj’s Small Fries and hopefully it will be more of the same in late 2010.”
“Taj really has got such a pull with the young kids, they love coming down competing in his event and hanging out with him around the contest site.” “We have been swamped with entries in all of the divisions and are expecting a completely full field of over 100 kids.”
Some of the hot local talent set to fly the WA flag include Creed McTaggart (Margaret River), Mikaela Greene (Yallingup), Jack Robinson (Margaret River), Bronte Macaulay (Gracetown), Shaun Manners (Margaret River) and Carly Lynch (Dunsborough) who have all placed well in the event in the past.
Another stellar line up of East coast talent will again make the journey west to mix it up with the best WA has to offer. Names such as Noa Deane (Coolangatta, QLD), Jackson Baker (Merewether, NSW), Jake Fissednden (Caloundra, QLD), and Jeames Young (Yamba, NSW) are all likely to provide some stiff competition.
For the second year running there will be a number of other activities in the region for the young kids to be involved in over the weekend including a special screening of new Billabong film STILL FILTHY on Friday 29th January and push in division for the micro groms on Saturday 30th before the finals.
