WA 's Youngest Surfers put to the test by East Coast Grommets at the Billabong Taj's Small Fries
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 January, 2010 : - - Yallingup, Western Australia -- A solid 2m (6 feet +) swell greeted and tested many of Australia’s best under 16 surfers at Yallingup for day 2 of the Billabong Taj’s Small Fries event. Despite the challenging conditions the youngsters, which included many 10 and 11 year old aspiring surfers, handled the large surf superbly as the local WA contingent dealt with the strong east coast representation.
Twelve year old Margaret River surfer Shaun Manners lead the charge scoring the day’s top scoring ride of an 8.2 out of a possible 10 in his easy round one heat win in the 12 Boys division and he was joined by fellow 12 year old Margaret River youngster Jack Robinson who easily won through his round two heat in the 16 Boys division.
Robinson, who already has quite a reputation as an emerging surfer with natural talent, is surfing in both the under 14 and under 16 Boys divisions here taking on some talented east coasters who also revelled in today’s great waves.
Jeames Young (Yamba/Northern NSW), Kai Hing (Sunshine Coast Qld) and Noah Deane (Gold Coast Qld) all comfortably won their heats today setting the scene for a classic east takes on West battle tomorrow as finals run in excellent surf. Yamba’s Jeames Young came to this event last year and placed 3rd in the 12’s division and is confident he can go further this year in the 14’s division.
“I love surfing the powerful waves around here and I want to come here every year to compete and free surf – I’m confident I can win the 14’s division this year – I’m used to the waves out there and I’m looking forward to the finals tomorrow” said Young after his high scoring heat win today where he defeated Geraldton’s James Fleming who placed 2nd in the four man heats to also advance to tomorrows quarter finals.
Taj turned up around mid day after surfing some excellent near-by waves as he prepares for his coming ASP season. “Great to see all the young surfers coping with some big waves, they look well in control out there and heaps of them are absolutely ripping – tomorrow’s finals day should be fantastic” said Burrow.
The girls also excelled today, Gracetown /WA local Bronte Macaulay signalled that she’s the girl to beat in the 16 Girls division where she top scored defeating Victoria’s Zoe Clarke. Waves are expected to be perfect for tomorrow’s finals action and the surfing will most likely begin around 8:00am at Yallingup’s main break.
