23rd Annual HB Longboard Crew Pier Paddle runs with marathon

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 January, 2010 : - - Huntington Beach -- The 14th Annual Surf City USA Marathon is embracing the Southern California surf culture in a big way, February 5 to 7, 2010.  The largest oceanfront running event in the country is infused with surf culture, surf music, surfboards, surf vehicles (Woodies) and surf-themed medals for all finishers.

Preceded by the Active Lifestyle Expo and 23rd Annual HB Longboard Crew Pier Paddle on Saturday, the event culminates on Sunday afternoon with live music from The Fabulous Nomads, one of the OC’s oldest surf bands, and Outer Wave.  Course entertainment during the race includes The Rip Tides (Goldenwest & PCH), Goofyfoots (Main Street & PCH), Billy Blastoff and the Surf Rockets (Bolsa Chica) and The Breakaways (11th Street & PCH).

Staged on Super Bowl Sunday, February 7, 2010, the Surf City USA Marathon is the largest combined oceanfront marathon and half marathon event in California.  It features more than 20,000 entrants participating in three divisions – marathon, half-marathon and 5K – and is preceded by a two-day exposition.  Detailed information is available at runsurfcity.com

The HB Longboard Crew Pier Paddle will be held on February 6, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.  According to club president Gary Sahagen, this change from Sunday to Saturday is the first time in the long history of the Pier Paddle Race that it will not happen on a Sunday.  The new timing allows the race to better align with the Surf City USA Marathon, one of the Longboard Crew's partners in this event.  Additionally, marathon runners can now compete in both running and paddling events.  Special awards are planned for all participants who accomplish that feat.

<>Entries are limited to the first 100 surfers who sign up and the race is open to all ages and any size surfboard. The Pier Paddle Race participants will paddle out from the south side of the pier, race around the HB pier and finish back on shore on the north side, a distance of about 800 yards.  The HB Longboard Crew’s involvement with the Surf City USA Marathon also includes lining the race starting line with surfboards at 6:30 a.m. and staffing the beer garden.

The Surf City USA Marathon, which serves as a “qualifier” for the prestigious Boston Marathon, was rated among the top five marathon experiences in America by Marathon and Beyond.  The award-winning course is scenic and flat with much of the race taking place on the beachfront running path, but also featuring the famed pier, beauty of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands and serenity of Central Park.  More than 30,000 spectators from the 48 contiguous states and 19 foreign countries are anticipated to pack the downtown and outlying areas.

Formerly known as the Pacific Shoreline Marathon, the 14th Surf City USA Marathon is held on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010; racing begins at 6:30 a.m.  The starting point is on Pacific Coast Highway, just south of Main St. and the famed Huntington Beach Pier.  Weekend highlights include the two-day Active Lifestyle Beach Expo and Michelob Ultra Post Race Beer Garden.
