Kirra Point, Australia
5 - 7 February 2010

Kirra Point Set to Pump for the Rhythm Kirra Teams Challenge for the first time in 16 Years!

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 February, 2010 : - - Kirra Point is coming to life and all indications indicate some classic waves hitting the famous point right on-time for this weekend’s Rhythm Kirra Teams Challenge – Australia’s most prestigious title in Club Surfing! Kirra Boardriders Club stalwart Neal Purchase Junior is optimistic the event will run at Kirra.

“ You’re never certain until the swell actually appears at Kirra but it’s seriously looking good for the weekend, the sand at Kirra is better positioned than it has been for a long long time and the swell and winds predicted for the weekend should really produce some great waves – Kirra is the events home and for everyone it is super exciting to think we’ll be back surfing great waves at the point again – with Australia’s top clubs coming the vibe will be massive” said Purchase before going for a surf at Kirra today.

Making their annual sojourn, 32 of Australia’s best boardriding clubs will land on the golden shores of the Gold Coast to showcase their surfing talents to do battle over 3 gruelling days of competition to eventually determine who will be crowned and take home the coveted title of Australia’s best boardriding club.

Northern Gold Coast club North End Boardriders victorious in 2009 are out to achieve back to back wins the only other clubs to do so in the history of the ‘Challenge’ are Merewether (NSW) 86/87 and Kirra 93/94.  In a close finish last year, North End defeated the super strong and highly fancied Le-Ba (Lennox/Ballina) club from northern NSW.

The Snapper Rocks Boardriders Club holds the penultimate record for 3 wins in a row,  twice being 95 to 97 and 03 to 05  Over the past 25 years Snapper have won the event 8 times followed by Kirra 5 times and  Queensland clubs have dominated competition taking out the ‘Challenge’ no less than 17 times against NSW 8 times.

There is an air of excitement surrounding this year’s  event with Kirra set deliver amazing surf to the event for the first time in 16 years! Schedule of Events -  It all starts on Thursday 4th February 07:30pm (Qld time) at the Rainbow Bay SLSC with a live performance from ‘The Dirty Birds’

Friday 5th February, first day of competition will see the junior ranks representing their clubs hit the water, at 04:30pm (Qld time) will see the Gold Coast Titans vs. the Pro Surfers in a head to head touch football game on Rainbow Bay Beach followed by an autograph signing with the Gold Coast Titans and Pro Surfers back in the Rainbow Bay SLSC.

Later in the evening will feature the first heat of the ‘Battle of The Bands’  Saturday, second day of competition will see the open surfers hit the water later in the evening at 05:00pm (Qld time) back at the Rainbow Bay SLSC will be screening the  Rhythm/Electric surf film night hosted by Matt Hoy this is sure to have bubble and squeak about it.

08:00pm second heat of the ‘Battle of The Bands’ followed by at the Neverland Bar performing on stage the ‘Goons of Doom’ and ‘The Dirty Birds’  Sunday, last and final day of competition is considered make or break day for those clubs vying in the lead to take out the ‘Challenge’

04:00pm presentation of awards at the Rainbow Bay SLSC then at 08:00pm off to the Neverland Bar for the finals party followed by at 09:30pm on stage with the winners of the ‘Battle of The Bands’ then the ‘The Goons of Doom’ topping the night off with two front members from Grinspoon to close the party
