Roxy Pro Trials

ASP World Tour Women's Trial event
Snapper Rocks, Queensland
26 February 2010

Two Teenage World Champions to contest Roxy Pro Trials

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 February, 2010 : - - The upcoming Roxy Pro Trials will boast two newly crowned world champions Laura Enever (North Narrabeen, Aus) and Tyler Wright (Lennox Head, Aus) both out to secure the lone wildcard into the season-opening Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour event on the southern end of the Gold Coast.

The teenage sensations will be hoping to continue their winning streaks at Snapper Rocks on February 26th. Eighteen year-old Enever, who won the ASP world junior title in early January, has narrowly missed out on the coveted wildcard at the past three Roxy Pro Trials and is hoping 2010 is the year she gets to compete in her first ever world tour event.

“The world junior win has been an amazing way to start my year off and I would love to follow it up with another win at the Roxy Pro Trials,” said Enever. “I have never made it through to the main event or surfed in a world tour event,” continued Enever. Enever is not underestimating the task ahead and is already on the Gold Coast cruising and preparing for the prestigious tournament.

“It’s a tough trials line-up,” said Enever. “Tyler has been surfing so good and she surfs Snapper a lot....I know all the girls will have their eyes on that one wildcard, so everyone will be going all out,” added Enever.

Surfing prodigy Wright, 15, is also expected to be amongst the top performers in the 12 girl-field of invited and qualifying surfers after claiming back-to-back under 18 girl’s titles at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in New Zealand two weeks ago.

At just 14 years of age Wright made history as the youngest-ever surfer to win an ASP World Tour event, which she did in Sydney in 2008. Wright said her world title win in New Zealand was a great lead-up to the Roxy Pro Trials.

"To be the best in the world in any sport is an amazing feeling and I hope I can continue my form into the Roxy Pro trials and then the Pro Junior series,” she said. The wildcard winner will take on reigning three-time world and defending Roxy Pro champion Stephanie Gilmore in round one of competition.

The Roxy Pro Trials is again stacked with potential giant-killers including former wildcard winner Ashleigh Smith (Kingscliff, AUS), Phillipa Anderson (Merewether, AUS), Bianca Bultendag (Sth Afr), Airini and Sarah Mason (Tugun, AUS). The Roxy Pro Trials will be staged in conjunction with the Quiksilver Pro Trials on Friday, February 26th.

The Roxy Pro is proudly supported by Quiksilver, Jetstar, Olympus, Dermalogica, GCCC (Gold Coast City Council), CSGC (connecting southern Gold Coast), Moreton Hire, Telstra, Coastalwatch, RBSLC (Rainbow Bay Surf Life Saving Club) and ASP.
