Kelly Slater waves off talk of an alternative surfing tour
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 February, 2010 : - - Waving off talk of an alternative surfing tour at Thursday's Quiksilver Pro launch, Kelly Slater slammed media reporting of speculation over several months that he was involved in a move to create a "rebel" surfing tour.
He said he was open to change in surfing - 'whether it's with ASP or someone else' - if the result was a better product for the sport. 'Everyone just seems to jump on the first thing they hear about any of this stuff,' said Slater.
"I've read articles with lists of names of people who had signed up, and one of them was my good friend Shane Dorian, who doesn't even know what it is - he didn't know about it. "I don't know how much miscommunication you can have in the media but it's been just basically crazy.
"I think everyone does know there was some stuff being thrown around and there were some options, and I think it's obvious to say those options have had an affect on the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) Tour, and for us to all get our butts moving and change a bit.
"That's where it stands and until another contest runs and the hooter blows and someone raises a cheque and there's a winner, I don't see another tour.
"Definitely I'm open to change in surfing, whether it's with ASP or someone else, but I think that's a positive thing just to have an effect on what we're doing, so we can have the best product available to watch."
