NSSA gears up for 2010 March Madness

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 March, 2010 : - - Huntington Beach -- Surfing fans wait every year for the tradition - the excitement - and the team battles that make up the NSSA Interscholastic State Championships.  This yearís team fever will kick off March 5 on Huntington Beachís famed center stage with the College Championships.

The much awaited Varsity and Junior Varsity High School Championships will follow on March 6 and continue on March 7 along with the Middle School Championships and all of the finals from the College, Varsity and Junior Varsity and Middle School divisions.  Teams from the 2010 Interscholastic State Championships will be competing in the hopes of earning a bid to the 2010 National Interscholastic Championships June 16-July 3 at Salt Creek and Huntington Beach Pier.

COLLEGE NOTES: San Diego State enters the college post season as the number one seed.  In conference play this season, the Aztecs won two of the four-event series and placed second and third in the other two.  What is sure to fuel their fire is the frustrating upset loss to the Cal State San Marcos team at the 2009 National Championships.  11Ėtime National Champion UC Santa Barbara took the other two season victories and look to be the biggest challenge facing SDSU.

Conference champ Rachel Harris and No. 2 ranked longboarder Cole Robbins will aim to deliver for the Gauchos.  Team Captain Colin Andersen who finished the season ranked fifth in the College Menís is serious about bringing the title back to UCSB.  UC San Diego finished the season ranked third and will be a top threat.  Their major weapon is Marty Weinstein who claimed the 2009 College Menís National title.  Weinstein, who will be going on to dentistry school, finished off his senior year winning the 2010 Conference title.

UCSDís Kokoro Tomatsuri finished third overall in the College Menís conference standings and is already a proven champion at HB Pier winning the Explorer Menís division at last yearís West Coast Championships.  No. 4 ranked Point Loma has been in the hunt for its first championship title since 1999 when they pulled off a stunning victory at the National Championships.  Their intensely competitive Longboard surfer Troy Mothershead owns a multitude of State titles winning the College Longboard in 2008 and a 4-year streak when he was at San Clemente High School.

This year, he claimed the Conference College Longboard title with two victories and also competes on the shortboard team.  No. 5 ranked Mira Costa team is always a worthy opponent in the race for a title.  They were squeezed out of a State title last year by one point to SDSU so itís redemption time for them.  San Marcos slipped to No. 8 in the 2009-10 conference standings after their inspiring Nationals victory but you can never count them out if they bring their starting squad intact to Huntington.

Reigning State Womenís champion Erika Cook from Saddleback will aim to defend her title as well as defending Menís champ Daniel Shea from UC Santa Cruz and Kevin Osborne from UC Santa Barbara in the Longboard.

HIGH SCHOOL NOTES: The High School showdown is sure to deliver some of the most exciting battles and drama of the event.  Reigning State Champion San Clemente has won eight State Championships in its exceptional history and two under head coach John Dowell.  The Tritons boasts a solid lineup for this year including 2009 High School Menís State champion Shaw Kobayashi and No. 1 ranked Open Junior Trevor Thornton who has quickly emerged as one of the top junior talents in the country.

San Clemente will also be looking to defend their State title in the Junior Varsity category.  No. 2 ranked San Dieguito finished third at the 2009 Nationals and fourth at last yearís State titles.  The SD squad proves year after year they are contenders and in 2010 bring in four players, Derrick Disney, JD Lewis, Cooper Jones and Zane Norman who rank in the top 20 of their Southwest Conference divisions.

Newport Harbor put up solid results in 2009 placing third at State and fourth in the Nationals.  Major players include reigning Womenís State Champion Kaleigh Gilchrist and freshman Colin Moran who is one of the NSSAís rising stars.  Moran just came off an exceptional performance in huge surf at the Salt Creek Open making double finals in Menís and Juniors.  No. 4 ranked Edison High School usually flies under the radar to their cross-town rival Huntington Beach, but not in 2009.

Edisonís Junior Varsity squad pulled off a gigantic triumph at the 2009 Nationals while their Varsity team finished fifth in both the 2009 State and National Championships.  Edison standout Clay Crandal grabbed headlines this January for his winning performance at the Ventura Open Season in sizable 6-8 foot waves.  Cole Devine, who won the 2009 National JV Menís title, has moved up to Varsity and National Longboard runner-up Jeff Newell will return.

Southwest Conference Longboard standout Shaun Thompson will return to Edisonís Junior Varsity squad attempting to defend his 2009 State crown and also compete in shortboard.  No. 5 ranked Carlsbad High School will be led by Dominic DiPietro who is ranked eighth in the Southwest Open Menís standings along with defending State Longboard champion David Arganda.

Prideful Huntington Beach High School is ranked No. 6 this year but should have a big advantage competing in the friendly confines of HBís southside arena and will not want to make a statement on their home court.  Head Coach Andy Verdone led the HBHS to the State title in 2008 and has a lot riding on this event in front of a hometown crowd.

Reigning Southwest Open Menís Champion Christian Saenz is the Oilerís major caliber player and will be anxious to bring the State title back to Huntington Beach but he will have to have help from his supporting cast.  This past weekend, Saenz came off an impressive victory in the heavy surf at the Salt Creek Open so his confidence should be high.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NOTES: In the Middle School category, Shorecliffs has been unstoppable the past four years.  The reigning State and National Champions are looking dominant again with NSSA top 10 ranked surfers Colin Deveze, Colt Ward and Corey Colapinto in their lineup.  Shorecliffís longboarder Andy Nieblas will return to defend his 2009 State title.
