mesurf reviews the pros and cons from the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 March, 2010 : - - mesurf is all about examining products and services in the world of surf. In today’s world there’s more to a competition than wind and waves, it’s all about the commentary, the online webcasts and even mobile soluitions. Mesurf are going to look at each ASP stop-over and examine who really has the best event.
First off the rank is the Quiksilver Pro. Quiksilver's tag for the competition was 'BEST'. BEST competition, BEST barrels, BEST combination's, BEST overall scores, BEST surfers, BEST location, BEST bikini, BEST asses? Anyway, you get the point. Now while it wasn't the BEST surf we've ever seen, Quiksilver have put on the BEST 'external' coverage of an ASP event to date and here's why...
ONLINE The online set up was smart, well planed out and offered a lot of extra video content to keep you 'in the loop'. Hoyo was obviously working his hairy ass off for the entire competition putting together daily 'behind the scenes' clips, and there were Land Rover blogs, regularly updated 'heats on demand', news, surf forecasts and more. A micro site that had heaps to offer and most content was well edited worthy of a watch. I said 'most'!
PRO'S - The site was constantly updated, and updated fast. You weren't left waiting hours for heats on demand, point scores, photo's and news.
- The commentating was done well, and Quiksilver did a great job selecting crew who got along, worked well together and knew what they were talking about (most of the time)
- The live coverage moved around from surfing, to on the ground, to a few backstage pieces, and ads. Keeping it fresh and digestible in long stints.
- 90% of the time the braodcast was seamless without any glitches, or loading issues. This has been a common issue at other events over the years.
- The micro-site was well designed, easy to read, and easy to navigate.
- New camera angles from things like Heli's, towers and the point.
