Hyundai Malfunction More than a Surf Contest: It’s a Way of Life
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 March, 2010 : - - From its humble beginnings in 1984 when a group of like minded surfers got together to have fun in the waves the Malfunction has grown to be a little bit of something for every surfer.
Now spread over 5 days and 14 different divisions that cater for all ages and abilities you can expect to see professional world longboard champion surfers like Harley Ingleby (2009) and Josh Constable (2006) tearing up the waves or talking to first time competitors like 11 yr old Cohen Jennings–McKay from Pottsville, world renown big wave charger James “Billy” Watson or 1999 world wind surfing champ Scott McKercher from WA.
With countless past and present amateur Australian Longboard Champions already nominated, you would expect the competition to be fierce, but many of the competitors and the spectators come just to catch up with old friends and to make some new ones while soaking up the atmosphere that Hyundai Malfunction has to offer. Three surfers Sally Paxton, Terry Taylor and Peter Stiklen have competed in every Malfunction since 1984.
Along with all the action in the surf there is plenty happening on the beach with lifestyle stalls, classic surf vehicle display, surf films, book signings, live music and much much more. With over $10,000 in prizemoney up for grabs there are also 11 longboards and $15,000 in prizes making this one of the richest longboard events in the world.
