Irish Surfer Glenn Hall Wins ASP WQS 4-Star Burton Toyota Pro in Australia

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 March, 2010 : - - Newcastle, NSW Australia -- Glenn Hall (IRL), 28, won his maiden ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) event this weekend in Australia, the Irish athlete taking top honours at the Burton Toyota Pro, an ASP WQS 4-Star rated competition.

Hall, who defeated South African Brandon Jackson (ZAF) in the final scoring an excellent 16.67 point heat total (out of a possible 20), showed he was back in good form for 2010, after last year’s impressive run that saw him peak to No. 14 on the international ratings before falling outside the ASP Dream Tour qualification Top 15 group.

“Newcastle is a great contest and great fun,” Hall said. “I won US$300 here when I was 14 and convinced Mum to let me use it to enter the WQS event the next week… I’ve never really been on the podium all that much and it’s a real honor to be here when I think about all the great surfers that have won this competition.”

Hall, who came close to his dream of qualifying for the ASP World Tour in 2009, had never won an ASP sanctioned event until Sunday but had already showed how strong he could be in any kind of waves.

With a couple of equal 3rd places in back-to-back ASP WQS 5-Star events in Europe last year (Zarautz and Pantin, Spain), Hall finished 2009 inside the ASP European Top 5 for the second consecutive year, the Irish representative sitting on two overall regional No. 3 finishes.

Newcastle has seen a series of good performances from European surfers in the past with Tim Boal (FRA) getting a 4th place finish and Jeremy Flores (FRA) a runner-up. Hall, who decided to become an Irish national three years ago, kept the European flag high again in the 2010 edition and takes home precious ratings points and prizemoney.

Following the footsteps of ASP legend Mark Richards, Hall received his crown from the man himself, a former Four-time ASP World Champion. "Mark Richards has always been a hero to me and to have him here today when I won is just terrific," Hall said.

Glenn Hall a.k.a Micro unleashed his impressive backside style and attacks to finish atop a solid a 112-Man format ousting current ASP World Title race athlete Drew Courtney (AUS), Top WQS soldier Shaun Gossmann (AUS) and former elite member Darren O’Rafferty (AUS) on his way to victory.
