You've got digital, now get ready for internet TV
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 March, 2010 : - - Forget 3D, one of the most exciting advances in televisions this year will be internet TV. Known as IPTV – or Internet Protocol TV – it will let you play shows when you want to by streaming them over a broadband connection. The idea is that you hook your TV up to the internet and suddenly get dozens of extra channels to choose from.
And rather than simply flicking over to those channels, you get a list of what shows they offer and choose which one, and which episode, to watch. Sony has started showing off its IPTV service, called Bravia Internet Video, that's being rolled out in Australia from this month. It offers 15 extra channels from brands and broadcasters like SBS, Billabong, Yahoo!7, Wired, Style.com and YouTube, but you need a particular TV to use it.
Sony says 21 of the 26 TV models it has on sale this year will be able to use the service. Other big-name manufacturers are expected to unveil their own IPTV services soon, with Panasonic hinting at an announcement "later in the year".
