Junior surfers put on a show at Noosa Festival of Surfing
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 March, 2010 : - - Noosa, Sunshine Coast Queensland -- Following a firecracker day of performance surfing from the pro’s on Thursday, Junior Boys and Girls had plenty to be inspired by as they took to the surf for the first time at the Noosa Festival of Surfing today.
Second seed Jack Lynch made his trip from Scotts Head, NSW worthwhile when he posted the highest individual wave score of the entire event, a near perfect 9.5 (out of a possible ten) during the Pacific Longboarder Junior Men’s division this morning.
Picking up one of the best looking waves of the day, Lynch’s smooth, calculated surfing all the way to the inside earned him a convincing heat win over Brodie Williams (QLD) and Nic Jones (QLD), to advance into Sunday’s final. “I saw a couple of barrels come through before my heat so I was looking for one out there and was stoked to have found it,” said Lynch. “It’s been amazing to surf in these conditions with only six guys out and I cant wait for the final.”
Bundaberg surfer George Cunningham and former Noosa resident Clinton Guest (Gold Coast) kept spectators glued to their seats, out-pointing one another in a heated wave-for-wave exchange that saw Cunningham pip Guest at the post to advance in first place.
While the pair opened their accounts with equal 8.25 scores, it came down to back-up rides, Guest posting a 5.75 before Cunningham secured a 5.9 (both out of ten) off the last wave of the heat to edge his way into the final. “That was pretty close and I was relieved to get through there at the end,” said Cunningham. “I watched the pro’s surf out here yesterday and I was pretty fired up to get out there today.”
Local surfer Jackson Winter (Sunshine Beach) gave the locals something to cheer about, his intimate knowledge of First Point a clear advantage as he rode just two waves scoring a 6.00 and a 7.50 to advance into the final over Ed Cunningham (QLD) and Will Cousins (Vic).
“It was so good to compete in pumping waves, it almost never happens for a contest and I was surfing with some of my best mates out there so I couldn’t have asked for better,” said Winter. “I watched Josh (Constable) smash his heat yesterday, he’s really someone I look up to and is always open to offering tips and advice so it’s great to surf an event alongside some of the best in the world.”
The opening round of the Australian Longboarder Junior Women’s division was dominated by the top seeds, with 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th seeds winning their opening heats. Second seed Kirra Perry, another Scotts Head local, put on a brilliant performance, riding just two waves to post the highest heat total of the division, advancing into the semifinals ahead of Taylor Nelson (USA) and Ali Flemming (NSW).
Top seed Roisin Carlon (Byron Bay, NSW) reveled her dominance on the reeling –right-hander that is First Point, winning her exchange over Molly Powell (Vic) and Lucy Cantori (QLD). Fifth and third seeds Beth Palmer (Caloundra, QLD) and Georgie Roach (Maroochydore) were other heat winners advancing into the semifinals ahead of Kira Molner, Sarah Toussieng (USA), Rachel Flemming (NSW) and Sam Suendermann (Vic).
Twelve semifinalists were decided in the Sticky Feet Boys Under 15’s division with Ben Considine (Vic) and James Haggerty (NSW) top scoring this morning. Joining them in the semifinals were fellow heat winners Daniel Potter (Qld) and Ethan Moller (Qld) as well as second and third place surfers Kai Ellice-Flint (NSW), Riley Moller (Qld), Kodi Wulff (Qld), Ethan Kostromin (Qld), Hugh Daugaard (NSW), Eli Steele, Jake Goold (Qld) and Luke O'Neill.
The semifinals of the U15 Boys, U18 Girls, Old Mal Surfing World Old Mal and Zinc 91 Womens Open were schedule for late this afternoon. For full updated results visit aspaustralasia.com/live/2010/noosa/live.php
