Stormy surf on penultimate day of competition at Noosa Festival of Surfing
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 March, 2010 : - - Noosa, Sunshine Coast, Queensland -- A chunky two- meter east-north-east swell greeted surfers on the penultimate day of competition at the Noosa Festival of Surfing today, prompting organisers to extend heat times and cancel exhibition performances.
As large volumes of water washed through Laguna Bay it was the surfers competing in the Golden Breed Noserider Pro division who were forced to rely on their years of wave riding experience in order to seek out just the right type of wave on which to perform the very technical hang-five and hang-ten maneuvers.
“Those were definitely not noseriding conditions out there today,” said Taylor Jensen (USA), “it was really hard to find the right ones that weren’t going to barrel and close out on you.”
Jensen’s poised performance during the first semifinal against Alex Bullpit (Qld), Ezra Norris (Qld) and Zye Norris (Qld) saw he American born, Australian based surfer clock in substantial time on the nose, riding a wave almost all the way to the rock wall at First Point, to earn his spot into tomorrow’s final.
“Noosa certainly takes the cake when it comes to nose-rising,” Jensen continued. “It’s a remarkable wave that attracts the who’s who of professional noseriders, Christian (Wach) is incredibly skilled in this division and I’m stoked to be into the final with that caliber of surfer.”

Christian Wach (USA) the defending event champion will be looking for his fourth consecutive Noserider title at Noosa this year, advancing out of today’s semifinal and join Jensen in the final.
Racking up the highest recorded time on the nose during his semifinal heat against Harrison Roach (Qld), Jai Lee (Qld) and Matt Cuddihy (Qld), Wach finished is heat with one for the crowd - riding the nose almost from take-off before tucking into an enormous First Point cavern, eliciting cheers of support from the crown but unfortunately just not able to come out.
“Almost every wave was a barrel out there when what you really want is a smaller running one,” said Wach. “I was having a bit of fun and going for the glory wave at the end but I knew I was never going to come out.”
Surfers competing in the Classic Malibu Men’s Open repocharge final had no qualms about hunting down a few barrels at First Point, former Noosa resident Clinton Guest outclassing the six-strong field to advance into tomorrows’ final.
Guest, who’s local knowledge was a clear advantage in the treacherous conditions, posted a 14.30 (out of 20.00) to defeat Ed Cunningham (Qld) and Michael Pinney (NZL) the three surfers joining George Cunningham (QLD), Jordie Brown (Vic) and Lee Coper (Qld) in the final. The Noosa Journal Family Challenge saw Queensland surfing families emerge top of the pile with the Cunningham family of Glenn and George (Bundaberg) and the Winter family of Paul and Jackson (Noosa) advancing into Sunday’s final in first places respectively.
Joining them will were Phil and Rubin Roxburgh (NSW) who were the top scoring second place finishers of the two semifinal heats. Stand-up paddlers were a treat to watch during round 3 of he Suncorp Paddle Pro early this morning as these astute watermen battled overhead surf on their enormous craft.
Keahi De Aboitiz (Qld) proved the man to beat in this division, generating plenty of speed and performing his maneuvers with unmatched control and was rewarded with excellent 8.50 and 7.25 scores to advance directly into the final.
Joining Aboitz in tomorrows final were James Watson (Qld) and Mathew Lumley (Qld) while Noel Woods (Qld), Zane Schweitzer (Haw), Noel Graham (NSW), Chris Mchutchison (Qld), Jackson Close (Qld) and Roger Saunders (NSW) will be forced to surf their way through the repocharge round.
Sunday sees an action packed day with finals in every division starting with the Sticky Feet U15 boys final at 07H00. The Australian Longboard Pro Women’s LQS final will start at approximately 13H40 followed by the Golden Breed Pro Mens LQS at 14h05. Prizegiving will take place directly afterwards.
