McComb defeated Australian Mitch Crews to take the win

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 March, 2010 : - - Rangiroa, Tahiti -- Tamaroa McComb (Tahiti) has earned what seemed rightfully his, securing a fairytale victory at the TNS Rangiroa Pro Junior in Taumoto, Tahiti today. McComb defeated Australian Mitch Crews, posting a perfect ten-point ride in the final to with the heat with 15.50 two-wave heat total to Crews’s 14.25 (both out of 20.00).

“I am so happy!” said McComb. “This is the best thing ever, it is the biggest contest I’ve won in Tahiti for sure!”

As conditions deteriorated for the final McComb found himself sitting precariously in second place. Needing an 8-point ride with just ten minutes remaining, the ocean picked its winner delivering McComb the wave of the day that saw the Tahitian disappeared deep into yet another Tuamoto barrel to post a perfect-10 point ride, sealing his victory over the Australian.

“I was really in trouble, I was sitting out there thinking I’m just going to have to wait for bomb,” McComb said. “I was just hoping for one wave to come and it did. It just made my day!” A standout from start to finish McComb posted excellent rides in every one of his heats, advancing over fellow Tahitian and another early event standout Enrique Ariitu (Tahiti) during the semifinals.

For Crews, the only Australian remaining on the final day of competition his runner-up result was bittersweet. Crews’s result in Tahiti has seen him secure the number 1 spot on the ASP Australasia Pro Junior ratings.

Finishing in equal third places were Niuhi Marere (Tahiti) who was defeated by Crews and Enrique Ariitu (Tahiti) who was sidelined by McComb. The TNS Rangiroa Pro Junior saw three days of flawless surf and action packed performances in what some are calling the best Pro Junior yet.

The inaugural Tahiti Nui Satellite Rangiroa Pro Junior saw 48 of the world's best pro junior, 20 years and under, compete in Tahiti from the 15 - 19 March 2010. The surfers will compete for US$25,000 in prize money and valuable ratings points to qualify for the ASP World Junior Tour.
