Alliance to Help Increase Awareness of SurfAid’s Humanitarian Mission

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 March, 2010 : - - Encinitas, California -- SurfAid International, a non-profit humanitarian organization, and action sports superstore Killer Dana, LLC, have created a philanthropic alliance to increase awareness of SurfAid’s mission to improve the health, wellbeing and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions that are connected to us through surfing.

The organization’s main focus is developing long-term, sustainable community health through the prevention of treatable disease via widespread education efforts to promote behavior change.

SurfAid works in the Mentawai Islands, located 90 miles off Indonesia’s West Sumatran coast, and Nias Island, 80 miles off the North Sumatran coast. The infant mortality rate (children under five) in the Mentawai Islands is 93 per 1,000 live births – nearly one in 10. In Nias, the rate is 66 deaths per 1,000 births. In industrialized countries, on average there are six deaths for every 1,000 live births.

SurfAid’s strategic alliance with Killer Dana will help spread the word to its core audience – the action sports community – about its mission to ease human suffering through community-based health programs. In an effort to reduce child mortality and prevent the spread of treatable diseases like malnutrition, infectious diarrhea and malaria, SurfAid offers community education on nutrition, hygiene, healthier sanitation practices, and use of specially treated mosquito nets.

It also works to facilitate access to clean water and empower communities to build and manage sustainable water supplies.

A socially responsible retailer, Killer Dana continues to focus on cause-based marketing efforts such as its partnership with SurfAid to make the world a better place by supporting a significant cause. Killer Dana will provide marketing and media support – mostly through social media networks such as Facebook and its company blog, the Killer Dana Board Society – to help spread the word about SurfAid’s efforts around the world.

“This partnership aligns with our core values – being a part of the surfing community and helping out as much as possible,” said Jacin Greenhill, Creative Director at Killer Dana. “We’re always looking to give back, and this is our opportunity to do that. Partnering with SurfAid allows us to connect with the action sports culture all over the world and do our part to help foster better standards of living in remote communities where surfers gather to pursue their passion.”
