Local Boy Woods Dominates Day-One Of The Hinterland Toyota Burleigh Classic

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 April, 2010 : - - Up-and-coming Burleigh Heads surfer Thomas Woods today declared his status as the competitor to keep an eye on as he lit up his home-break on day-one of the Hinterland Toyota Burleigh Classic.

As the second stop of the four-event $16,000 Queensland Championship Circuit, the Hinterland Toyota Burleigh Classic saw the State’s premier Open Male competitive surfers take to Burleigh Heads as the famous pointbreak wave delivered classic 1m conditions.

Woods was particularly impressive showing no fear on his was to finishing first in his fourth round heat, advancing through to the quarter final stage with a combined two-wave heat total of 13.10 (out of a possible 20).

“It’s always good to surf a contest a Burleigh, so hopefully the swell hangs in there tomorrow,” said Woods. “Surfing against Queensland’s best Open Males is a great way to measure your surfing against the State’s best, so we’ll just wait and see how tomorrow plays out,” he said.

Another standout on day-one was former Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour competitor Troy Brooks (Currumbin, Qld), who breezed through the opening rounds of the draw booking a fourth-round showdown with 2005 QCC Champion Damon Harvey and local Burleigh Heads wildcard Kyle Robinson.

Concluding tomorrow, the event champion will walk away with valuable ratings points in the 2010 QCC series, with the top two competitors after four events set to compete against the world’s best surfers at the 2011 ASP World Tour Quiksilver Pro Trials.

Not to be forgotten, several big names including Samba Mann (Coolangatta, 2004 QCC Champion), Shaun Gossmann (Snapper Rocks, 2008 QCC Champion), Jack Freestone (Coolangatta), Yerin Brown (Byron Bay, NSW) and Blake Wilson (Maroochydore, Qld) are all still in the running for tomorrow’s title.

Also on offer is the highly sought after XXXX Summer Bright Lager ‘Wave of the Weekend,’ with four cartons of XXXX Summer Bright Lager awarded to the competitor who registers the event’s highest single wave score (out of a possible 10 points) across the two-day competition.

So far, Thomas Woods is leading the charge registering the day’s highest wave score of 8.67 points (out of a possible 10).
For competition start times/location, competitors and spectators can call the Surfing Queensland Events Hotline each morning of the event - Ph# (07) 3030 6388
