Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 May, 2010 : - - Courtney Conlogue (USA) today claimed the inaugural Swatch Girls Pro Junior title in a closely fought 35-minute final at Les Bourdaines as she maintained her status as the inform surfer of the entire Swatch Girls Pro Junior.

Today also saw The Swatch Girls Pro run through to complete round 4 with excellent surfing witnessed in the stormy conditions setting up a great finals day tomorrow with the crowning of the Swatch Girls Pro Champion.
 
Overnight gale force winds whipped up the swell generating peaky 4-5ft waves at the main site at Les Bourdaines. During the entire day conditions remained contestable with many displays of physical fitness as the surfers entered the water various times during the day of competition.

Courtney Conlogue (USA) had surfed brilliantly the entire week and had just one more hurdle to overcome before claiming the Swatch Girls Pro Junior title and the young 17-year-old did not let herself down by remaining focused in the very physical conditions which pounded the main site late in the afternoon.

“There was definitely a lot of duck diving and running back up to the peak in that final for sure and anyone who got out there and managed to be in the right spot deserved the waves they caught.” Conlogue and her fellow finalist Coco Ho (HAW), Laura Enever (AUS) and Nage Melamed (HAW) are all good friends and have made big impressions also in the main event here this week making it through to the final day of competition tomorrow.

“It hasn’t really hit me yet this win here because of all the work we had to do today so I am really tired but I’m super stoked to be out there with Laura and Coco and Nage. It was great and to be a part of that group in the final because they are such good surfers was really special” The victory was sealed with a 7.50 out of a possible 10 surfing on her backhand performing a series of critical turns from start to finish.

“When I saw that wave I just thought I have to go and see how it goes because in these conditions you never know if the wave is going to be good or bad so you have to go and just experiment and hope it comes out right. That particular wave stood up right and it went all the way through and I got a great score.”

"I felt very confident out there,” continued Conlogue. “I wasn’t just out there sitting in the middle I actually managed to position myself and get the waves I needed and to win the final in the end.”

Coco Ho (HAW) finished second in the Swatch Girls Pro Junior and dominated the Swatch Girls Pro advancing to round 5 with a combined two wave total of 17.90 out of 20 the highest in the main event so far. Looking comfortable in the rugged conditions Ho has gained confidence in each heat she faces.

“It turned out to be conditions I have never surfed before but that is the fun of these events with the challenge of the waves and it was really similar to the US Open last year and that is where Courtney excels the most.”

“I would be very unhappy if I lost today in the WQS and then have this performance in the final but I had a good run in the main event this morning and had a really good heat so I’m stoked and happy to be a part of this event for the first time. I am definitely looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully the swell has gone through its crazy stage today and we can have some good waves for the finals tomorrow.”

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) 3-times ASP Women’s World champion along with current World ranked nº 2 Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) both advanced to the final day of competition at the Swatch Girls Pro with comfortable wins in their respective heats and are ready for a possible showdown in the final tomorrow. Gilmore surfed her first heats of competition today and although starting slowly has quickly got her momentum going and is a huge threat to her fellow rivals.

“The waves are here now and there are some really good banks so everyone is really happy with how it has picked up today but it is a little messy. The scores are high so that’s also good for all the people who are down here on the beach today and for us too.” "I’m happy with how that heat went and I am still getting into the groove of things so it is good to be in the next round and see what happens tomorrow.”

Sarah Baum (ZAF) 16, currently ranked nº 33 on the ASP Women’s One World ranking has clinched one of her best results of the year by advancing through to round 5 after finishing strongly to overtake Bethany Hamilton (HAW) with a solid 6.00 out of a possible 10 to advance behind Fitzgibbons.

“The whole 25 minutes just paddling and duck diving under waves so you have to find the ones which connect up to the inside section through to the beach. It is a really hard contest with all the girls surfing so well at the moment so I am stoked to get through to the next round. I surfed in the WQS at Margret River and I didn’t do too well so this result is really good for my year.”

After suffering a knee injury in her first heat of the day Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS) put in a courageous effort to get back into the water this afternoon and finish first in the final heat of round 4. Believing it is an old injury come back to haunt her campaign at the Swatch Girls Pro Miley-Dyer was able to concentrate on wave selection and ignore the uncertainty of a possible serious knee injury.

“In my previous heat I went to do a last turn and fell awkwardly so they have had a look at it and I haven’t torn anything so I am not going to destroy my knee if I go surfing but all the same without having a scan I am not sure. I have had a similar injury before and it feels the same this time so it is a bit strange standing up at least it doesn’t hurt and it is strapped fairly heavily and I just tried to put it out of my mind.”

“It’s my front leg so I just sat out there and waited for the good waves to come through and knew to just get some turns on my back foot and I am stoked to get through that heat,” explained Miley-Dyer of her heat strategy. “I will be surfing tomorrow for sure. I am going home to get some ice on it and just forget about it because I was really down when I did it and thought I have come all the way to France and in the end I have to pull out.”

The Swatch Girls Pro Junior an ASP Grade-2 event was run in conjunction with the Swatch Girls Pro bringing together a fantastic blend of both European and overseas talent for this second event on the ASP European Women’s Pro Junior Series.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 May, 2010 : - - Sur la plage des Bourdaines à Seignosse (40), l’avant-dernière journée du SWATCH GIRLS PRO s’est traduite par l’élimination générale de toutes les françaises face aux meilleures surfeuses mondiales présentes sur cette 5ème étape du championnat du Monde de surf professionnel WQS-ASP, dotée de 35 000$.

Dans la finale de l’épreuve junior du SWATCH GIRLS PRO qui se déroule cette après-midi dans des conditions dantesques, l’Américaine Courtney Conlogue, 18 ans, empoche la victoire face à l’Hawaïenne Coco Ho, 19 ans et nièce de l’ancien champion du Monde Derek Ho.

FINALE DU SWATCH GIRLS PRO JUNIOR : COURTNEY, COCO AND CO

La plage des Bourdaines s’enflamme en deuxième partie d’après-midi lorsque les qualifiées pour la finale du SWATCH GIRLS PRO JUNIOR se lance à l’eau devant un public venu voir les prestations de ces jeunes filles de moins de 21 ans dans des vagues puissantes qui déferlent sur les plus beaux beach-break du Monde. Avec un intense suspense jusqu’à la fin de cette ultime série du SWATCH GIRLS PRO JUNIOR, les Hawaïennes Nage Melamed et Coco Ho, l’Australienne tenante du titre junior mondial Laura Enever et l’Américaine Courtney Conlogue se livrent un duel sans merci où, après quelques vagues sans grandes performances, Ho entame les hostilités et sort un 4,75 points.

Elle est rattrapée par Melamed qui enchaîne un 4, puis 5 points. Coco revient avec 5,85 points, mais c’est sans compter sur l’opportunisme de Conlogue qui trouve une vague magnifique dans les dernières minutes qu’elle exploite parfaitement pour scorer 7,50 points, tuant le match et remportant les 1 100 $ de prix de cette victoire, accompagnés des 1500 points comptabilisés pour la qualification aux championnats du Monde Junior de surf professionnel féminin. Lors de la remise des prix, Courtney déclare "Je suis très fière de l’emporter sur Coco. Je suis quand même super fatiguée car les conditions étaient difficiles et le niveau très relevé".

JUSTINE ASSURE SA QUALIFICATION DE JUSTESSE !

Le début de cette longue journée démarre dès le coup de corne à 8h30 ce samedi matin sur le spot des Bourdaines, pour lancer la suite du WQS SWATCH GIRLS PRO, en attente depuis 2 jours. Les séries s’enchaînent tambour battant dans des conditions de houle grossissantes. Face à un océan plus violent que les jours précédents et un courant puissant, la durée des séries est amenée à 25 minutes contre 20 auparavant. Dans la premier conflit de la journée, la Française Lee-Ann Curren, 21 ans et fille de l’ancien champion du Monde Tom Curren, passe complètement à côté de sa série face à l’Australienne Tyler Wright, 15 ans et déjà auréolée cette année d’un titre de championne du Monde dans la catégorie moins de 18 ans.

Même scénario pour la réunionnaise Johanne Defay 16 ans, qui tombe dans la série de la triple championne du Monde Stéphanie Gilmore 22 ans. Johanne n’arrive pas à décrocher une note au-dessus de 3 points et demeure inconsistante face aux 7,00 et 6,55 points de Gilmore. Comme une traînée de poudre qui se propage, l’hécatombe Française se poursuit dans la 5ème série de ce tour du SWATCH GIRLS PRO avec une Amandine Sanchez, 26 ans et originaire de Bayonne, qui fait office de vétéran face aux jeunes pousses de l’élite mondiale du surf féminin. Elle se trouve peu inspirée et arrête là son parcours. A ses côtés, dans la même série, la landaise de 20 ans Alizée Arnaud, tient tête mais chute de 0,40 points face à l’Américaine de 18 ans Courtney Conlogue très & agrave; l’aise sur les vagues de Seignosse.

Autre déception française avec la championne du Monde junior 2008 de 19 ans Pauline Ado qui, à l’image de ses compatriotes, se fait éliminer avec un ridicule score de 4,25 points. Seule rescapée de ce nettoyage des Françaises sur le SWATCH GIRLS PRO, la surfeuse canaulaise de 19 ans Justine Dupont tire bien son épingle du jeu en optant pour une vague au Nord, beaucoup plus intéressante au changement de marée que la magnifique gauche en shore-break qui déroule jusqu’à présent en face du site de compétition. "J’ai vu cette vague se former et ma stratégie était de la surfer du fond jusqu’au bord" dit-elle. Elle décroche immédiatement une note à 5,50 points qui la place en tête de la série, mais l’expérimentée Hawaïenne Coco Ho la rejo int au nord du spot et découvre cette vague qu’elle exploite pour scorer un 4,00 puis un 5,40 points la propulsant à la première place. Justine, maintenant rejointe par toutes les surfeuses, se retrouve à la troisième place synonyme d’élimination et trouve une vague à moins de 2 minutes de la fin notée 3,85 points, juste assez pour passer au tour suivant. Elle rajoute : "Je suis contente de ma série et surtout d’être là. C’est bien pour le surf féminin français d’avoir un tel événement sur le continent.

Nous sommes de plus en plus de filles à surfer et ce genre d’initiative est bénéfique. En plus, l’organisation est parfaite et les vagues sont présentes" Dernière Française à confirmer la règle, Anne Cécile Le Tallec ne parvient également pas &agrav e; s’imposer. La palme du meilleur score de toute la compétition revient à l’Australienne de 20 ans Sally Fitzgibbons qui s’offre de superbes vagues qu’elle exploite parfaitement jusqu’à réaliser un "reverse" exemplaire affichant un 8,25 et un 8,00 points, pour une combinaison de 16,25 points, record absolu jusqu’à présent.

FIN DES FRANCAISES ET ENVOL DES INTERNATIONALES

Le tour suivant, synonyme de 1/8 de finale est une formalité pour les meilleures surfeuses mondiales qui haussent le ton et les scores ! Dans la première série, les Australiennes Tyler Wright et Laura Enever ne font qu’une bouchée de l’avant-dernière française encore en lice, Cannelle Bulard avec des scores combinés proches de 15 points. Stéphanie Gilmore et la Sud-africaine de 23 ans Rosanne Hodge réalisent un copier/coller de la série précédente en éliminant l’Hawaïenne Alana Blanchard.

Toute chance de podium tricolore s’anéantit lors de la 3ème série avec l’élimination de Justine Dupont face à Courtney Conlogue, décidemment survoltée sur tous les tableaux de ce premier SWATCH GIRLS PRO. Justine explique sa défaite : "J&rsquo ;ai utilisé la même stratégie que dans le tour précédent sauf que là, ça n’a pas payé. Sur une vague à potentiel, je me suis dit qu’il ne fallait pas tomber… et j’ai chuté ! Je suis sûr que je serais passée si je ne m’étais pas déconcentrée". La série 4 détrône le record du score le plus élevé établi dans la matinée par Fitzgibbons, avec la performance de Coco Ho sur deux vagues très longues, terrains idéaux pour développer des enchaînements de manœuvres qu’elle exécute de manière radicale, puissante et fluide : elle inscrit un 8,50 points, puis un 9,40 points frisant avec insolence la perfection.

Dans des conditions avoisinant les deux mètres en début d’après-midi, l’hawaïenne de 20 ans hand icapée d’un bras Béthany Hamilton se fait éliminer de quelques dixièmes de points face à Sally Fitzgibbons toujours impeccable. La dernière série voit l’élimination de la Brésilienne Bruna Schmitz, 20 ans et petite copine de Jérémy Flores venu spécialement la supporter.
 
Demain Dimanche, la houle est toujours présente avec un check-in prévu à 8h30 pour lancer les quarts de finale à trois du SWATCH GIRLS PRO WQS 2010 et une finale prévue à la mi-journée.
