The grey brigade go off at Cronulla

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 May, 2010 : - - The inaugural Tradies Ocean and Earth Surfmasters saw the grandmasters of surf mixing it up at North Cronulla today. Seeing the usual crew of weather beaten, salt encrusted, sand blasted, elder statesmen and women competing for ten prestigious titles, the event saw yesterday’s champions taking on solid conditions.

Recognising their love and passion for surfing in a format usually celebrated by the younger generation, the event witnessed over 45, 50, 55 and 60 years Men and Women’s divisions. With competitive levels still high amongst competitors, the day was not focussed solely on results said Peter Hunt, Surfing NSW Operations Manager.

“The response from competitors has exceeded expectations,” he said. “It’s clear that the elder statesmen, and women, of surfing haven’t lost their edge at all, but more than that its been great to se the camaraderie resonating through. We hope to see this event back bigger next year.”

Featuring a host of former champions and professional competitors, the Tradies Ocean and Earth Surfmasters saw some excellent performances going down. In fine-form in the solid three metre conditions was Scott Baxter, Craig Naylor and Sandra English who took out the Over 45 and 50 divisions with style.

Robert Smith destroyed the Over 45 Longboard division securing a perfect ten in the final, whilst Mark Aprilovic, Peter Toby and John Murray set the competition alight in the Over 55, 50 and 60 years respectively.

Transcending the boundaries of a traditional surfing competition, the Tradies Surfmasters also saw a range of free community based activities, including live music, fitness activities and displays all taking place in Dunningham Park throughout the day.

Rounding out the excellent celebration of surfing culture was an amazing collection of surf art, photography and surf education courses.
