Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 July, 2010 : - - Cape Town, South Africa – The Cold Water Classic Series has always offered the wild and rugged. Now comes the drama – with both the current World Number One, Jordy Smith as well as the current CWC Series leader, Royden Bryson knocked out of the competition as the quarter finalists were decided.

“It would have been nice to win three events here in South Africa,” said Jordy – talking about latest wins firstly in his hometown of Durban, then his first World Tour win at J-Bay. “But it’s also just cool to be here in Cape Town and have a contest here. I’ve been having fun and seeing friends.”

As the crowds flocked to the beach, Jordy Smith wowed all in his first heat of the day, before bowing out to Greg Emslie and now-local hero Matt Bromley in the Round of 32. “Jordy is such an amazing surfer. Just to make that heat meant so much to me,” said Kometijie local Matt Bromely after his heat in the Round of 32, before unfortunately stalling in the Round of 16.

It was the third day of competition at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic South Africa here on the Cape Peninsula, and it was the third different location in a row, held today at Longbeach – but even that didn’t remain the same.

“It’s like a completely different break out there this afternoon then it was this morning – with the tide and the winds,” said Shaun Joubert – one of 6 South African quarter finalists. He is joined by Chad Du Toit, Frankie Oberholzer, Greg Emslie, Antonio Bortoletto and Daniel Redman.

Standing out in the group are the two Australians – Dion Atkinson and Shaun Cansdell. “I get along with the South Africans. Between them and the Australians there’s a really good vibe – and I travel with one pretty much full time,” said Dion, who despite battling flu powered through to the quarters.

As for Shaun Canselll - while all the focus has been on Royden Bryson and Stuart Kennedy vying for the CWC Series lead, sitting quietly behind them has been Shaun, although there is nothing quiet about his surfing at this event.

“I really enjoy surfing lefthanders being a goofy footer and am pretty stoked to surf them in an event,” said Shaun. “It’s pretty wild conditions out there with that wind, and there’s a really cold current come in today so it’s freezing.”

“I was in third before this event,” he said of the CWC Seires rankings. “I would have to go pretty well but there’s still three events including this one – so anything can happen. Anyone could take it.”

The next call will be tomorrow July 29th at 8am starting with the quarterfinals.

CWC Contests - SurfersvillageSurfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 July, 2010 : - - Le Cap, Afrique du Sud -- Les Cold Water Classic Series ont toujours proposé des conditions sauvages et dures. Aujourd'hui il y a eu en plus de vrais coups de théâtre avec l'élimination du numéro 1 mondial Jordy Smith et du leader au classement des CWC Royden Bryson alors que la compétition a atteint les quarts de finale.

“Cela aurait été bien de remporter trois compétitions en Afrique du Sud,” a déclaré Jordy – faisant référence à sa victoire de Durban et à son premier succès sur une épreuve du World Tour à J-Bay. “Mais c'est aussi sympa d'être au Cap et d'avoir une compétition ici. J'ai pris beaucoup de plaisir et j'ai revu des amis.”

Alors que la foule envahissait la plage, Jordy Smith a impressionné tout le monde dans sa première série de la journée avant de s'incliner face à Greg Emslie et au nouveau héros local Matt Bromley lors des 32eme de finale.

“Jordy est un surfeur tellement exceptionnel. Avoir pu passer cette série c'est quelque chose d'énorme pour moi,” a déclaré le local de Kometijie Matt Bromely après sa série du tour des 32eme de finale, avant malheureusement de se faire éliminer à son tour en 16eme de finale. C'était la troisième journée de compétition de ce O’Neill Cold Water Classic South Africa ici sur la péninsule du Cap et c'était le troisième site différent d'affilée ici à Longbeach.

“C'est en plus un spot qui a totalement changé en quelques heures avec la marée et le vent,” a déclaré Shaun Joubert – l'un des 6 sud africains à avoir atteint les quarts de finale. Il a rejoint Chad Du Toit, Frankie Oberholzer, Greg Emslie, Antonio Bortoletto et Daniel Redman.

Les deux autres surfeurs de ces quarts de finale sont australiens– Dion Atkinson et Shaun Cansdell. “Je m'entends bien avec les sud africains. Entre eux et les australiens, il y a toujours une bonne ambiance et je voyage avec l'un d'eux quasiment en permanence,” a déclaré Dion, qui s'est qualifié pour les quarts de finale malgré une petite grippe.

Pour ce qui est de Shaun Canselll – alors que toute l'attention se portait sur Royden Bryson et Stuart Kennedy en tête du classement des CWC Series, il était discrètement à l'affut d'un faux pas des leaders pour refaire son retard et avec son résultat d'aujourd'hui l'australien se rapproche déjà de la première place.

“J'aime vraiment surfer des gauches car je suis frontside et cela me donne un avantage sur ce spot,” a déclaré Shaun. “Les conditions étaient assez dures aujourd'hui avec ce vent et il y avait en plus un courant vraiment froid aujourd'hui, l'eau était glacée.”

“J'étais troisième avant cette épreuve,” a-t-il déclaré en parlant du classement des CWC Series. “Il va falloir que je surfe très bien car il reste trois épreuves y compris celle-là, alors tout est possible. Aujourd'hui tout le monde peut décrocher ce titre.”
