Event benefits Ronald McDonald charity for children with cancer
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 July, 2010 : - - At nearly 50 years of age, Chris Chiechi-Radich went up against her surfing idol and teammates and won the women's division of the 19th Annual Call to the Wall contest in Malibu over the weekend.
"It was the best 50th birthday present I could hope for," said Chiechi-Radich, who turns 50 in six weeks. "Of course, you go in there hoping to win, and first place was the best I've ever done."
Call to the Wall saw more than 200 surfers compete in sunny conditions with chest- to head-high waves Saturday and Sunday. The event, which is hosted by the Malibu Boardriders Surf Club, benefited the Ronald McDonald charity for children with cancer.
Chiechi-Radich, who rides with the Big Stick Surfing Association and teaches Jazzercise in Santa Cruz, has been surfing for 34 years. She won both her semifinal and final heats. Fellow Big Stick surfer Joan Newby also made it to women's 29-and-over final, where she finished fourth. Joel Baldwin won the masters division, Michel Junod was fourth in that division and Ryan Devine was fifth among senior men.
