New champions crowned at Boomerang

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 July, 2010 : - -  Three new champions today stood proudly upon the winners dais as the Ocean & Earth NSW Junior Surfing Titles rolled on at Boomerang Beach. Having witnessed one of the finest days of junior surfing yesterday, day four was as equally impressive with all competitors laying it on the line.

Looking to qualify for a birth at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles at Phillip Island, the surfing that transpired was of the highest order. Leading the way in the 18 years division was Codie Klein (Kingscliff, NSW) who took out her maiden Ocean & Earth NSW Junior Surfing Title in fine style.

Overcoming spirited performances from Rachel Campbell (Stanwell Park, NSW), Letarcia Hurt (Salt, NSW) and Emily Clapoudis (Port Macquarie, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth consecutively, Klein was elated with the result.

“I’m really happy,” she said after putting together a combination of 11.50 (out of a possible 20) in the final. “I finished second last year, so winning was the only option,” she admitted. Behind a strong backhand attack, Klein sealed victory with an eight-point ride with only five minutes remaining.

In the 16 years division it was Michael Bain (Copacabana, NSW) who outshine his more fancied competitors. Racking up an impressive 14.00 (out of a possible 20), including a blistering eight-point ride, Bain left his rivals grasping for preliminary places after demolishing the one-metre peaks.

“I can’t believe I won,” he said with a massive grin. “I wish really nervous out there waiting for the siren to sound, I’m stoked with this.”

Defeating Soli Bailey (Suffolk Park, NSW), Michael Wright (Skenners Head, NSW) and Jackson Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth consecutively, Bain was over the moon with his performance.

Joining Bain, Klein and Sylvester as first time Ocean & Earth NSW Junior Surfing Titles champions was Kirsten Ogden (Byron Bay, NSW) who annihilated the 16 years girls division.

Defeating Stephanie Single (Lennox Head, NSW), Coco Beeby (Scotts Head, NSW) and Sophia Bernard (Manly, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth consecutively, Ogden continued where she left off in the qualifying rounds.

Showing an impressive repertoire of powerful turns, Ogden accumulated a total heat score of 11.75 (out of a possible 20) en-route to the title. Tomorrow will see the final day competition as the highly anticipated 14 years division’s will be decided.
