Southwest explorer opens up 2010-11 competion season
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 September, 2010 : - - The Southwest Conference opened up the 2010-11 competition season with Explorer event #1 at HB Pier. Great 4-6 foot surf compliments of a solid combination of southwest and west swell pumped through on Saturday for the Men’s, Juniors and Boys divisions.
The Pier sandbars were in terrific form with tons of quality scoring opportunity for the competitors. Sunday’s surf stayed in the good range with super fun 3-5 foot left and right peaks peeling and reforming to the sand. New and exciting season storylines are already in the making as a few surfers unleashed high performance and progressive moves which included an incredible Superman aerial by Santa Barbara’s Antoine Allain and a phenomenal Menehuene finals display by 11-year-old Encinitas standout Jake Marshall.
Antoine Allain pulled off the manuever of the season so far when he punted the Superman in his semi final heat nailing a perfect 10 score. With a giant confidence boost from the amazing aerial, Antoine stayed on the roll in the final winning it convincingly with a 15.0 total score. He seems to bust airs at will which will undoubtedly help him move up the competitive ladder.
In the Juniors division, Conor Beatty of Redondo Beach sealed his maiden NSSA victory in a close battle over HB local Shaun Thompson and San Clemente’s Breyden Taylor. Andrew Niemann who moved to HB last year from Hawaii, showed his promising potential by taking his first NSSA victory in the Boys division.
Andrew had a great run in his home break winning every heat en route to his finals victory. Boys runner-up Tyler Killeen showed he stepped up his level over the summer break moving up from the Menehuene 12 & under division clinching second place. In Sunday’s comp, Jake Marshall stole the show. In the Menehuene final, the reigning NSSA West Coast Champion put on clinic building a house of scores.
He posted a rock-solid 8.0 on his first wave, a blazing 9.0 on his second wave and then pressed the turbo button on his third wave with a onslaught of vertical lip blasts scoring a perfect 10! Jake’s total heat score of 19.0 out of 20 is the highest of the 2010-11 west coast season so far. In the Masters division, defending conference champion Rick Takahashi got his 2010-11 campaign in promising form winning the Masters final in a strong competitive heat with Neil Bern.
Three-time National Champion Mike Reilly and NSSA alum Chris Munsterman. Takahashi who is also the reigning conference champ in the Seniors category, settled for second place in that division as a result of the solid surfing by Chris Munsterman who claimed his first ever NSSA victory. Chris was elated to take home the first place trophy, finally breaking the ice after years of competing in Open.
Explorer and College divisions! Defending Super Seniors Conference Champion Rusty Phillipy was surfing as solid as ever clinching the first victory of the season while building on another championship run. Pat Conway made an impressive return to NSSA competition sealing the Duke victory over reigning National Champion Patrick Schlick. HB local and reigning National Open Longboard Champ Shaun Thompson displayed his strong, smooth technique en route to the Longboard victory.
Carlsbad up-and-comer Kylie Loveland returned to NSSA competition from the summer break with sharpened skills. The 12-year-old dominated both female categories with impressive double victories in both the Women’s and Girls finals. In the NSSA’s newly established Super Grom 10 & under division, the kids were ripping the fun left and right peaks.
In the 6-grom final showdown, Griffin Foy claimed his first ever NSSA victory with a 9.5 total score. Huntington Beach local Ben Seaberry finished a close second with a 9.0 total. The NSSA Southwest Conference is proud to have support from Nike 6.0, Huntington Surf and Sport, Java Point, Surfing Magazine, Sex Wax, Channel Islands and Sugar Shack. The NSSA is a member of Surfing America, the ISA-recognized National Governing Body for Surfing in the United States.
COMING UP IN CALI: Southwest Conference Explorer action will continue the following weekend September 4-5 at HB’s 9th Street sandbars. Premier competition in the Southwest Open Season begins September 11-12 at Huntington Beach Pier. The Gold Coast Conference resumes the competition schedule on September 18-19 with a doubleheader event #3 and #4 at Ventura Harbor.
