VQS Mullet Fish Crozon heats up with 11 hour heats |  Francais ci-dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 September, 2010 : - - We were back in Crozon for the 4th time during the warmest and sunniest week end of the whole summer, except for Brittany which was cold, windy and with light scattered rain – the only region in the whole country with this kind of weather!

But thankfully the local people were there to warm us with their legendary hospitality. 100 brave “Breton” people came early on this sad and rainy Saturday morning for inscriptions, where they could enjoy a hot breakfast offered by our two lovely hostess, Charlotte from Absolut Surf Shop and Valerie from Volcom! Even if we were not lucky with the weather, we were with the swell, which was the only one in the last couple weeks with 3-4 foot waves.

First heat in the water at 9 am, last one out at 8 pm, 11 hours of contest!!! That was a heck of a long day, one where we could see:
- The tide changing 3 times, from low to high to low.
- An intern dressed as a lobster for a weird rodeo game.
- More than 10 bags of flour thrown
- A huge Air guitar contest with toes in the ocean mandatory
- 130 sandwiches eaten

As usual we started with the Grom category, who are always on time for registrations (it’s hard to wake up anyone in the Open division at 8 am on a Friday morning!) and motivated to surf in any conditions! Without surprise, Harry Timson, Charly Quivront from the Volcom team and 2 locals, Adrien Boadec and Tim Faujour clawed their way to the final!

At the end, Harry won, with some impressive shredding (Crozon and Fistral are really similar….apparently) in front of his team mate Charly, who wasn’t lucky with his wave choice. Like in the Groms, it was no surprise in Juniors category, with two of France’s best young surfers, Ian Fontaine and Gaspard Larsonneur in final, rounded out with young Leo Latourte, 15, who was in the Groms’ final last year and Augustin Graignic.

Ian Fontaine, who placed second last year, took his revenge this year and won easily the “Cider” trophy, placing in front of one of Brittany’s new upstarts, Gaspard Larsonneur, and also Leo Latourte. Girl’s category started in semis due to the overall number of entries, and so we waited a couple hours before their first heat…thank you girls for your patience!

The two past winners, Lena Le Frapper (2009) and Lola Boutin (2008) battled for the top spot, and finally Lena won her second consecutive VQS Mullet fish in front of Lorene Jezequel in second place, Lola in third and the very young Charlotte Billon in fourth place. The last final of the day was the Open divsion, without the 2009 champion, Thomas Esquillot from Le Landes, who lost in ¼ final, was surprised by the water temp and high level, but hopefully took his revenge on the Saturday night (party)….

This final was the highest level ever seen in Brittany, with the best surfer during the whole contest and brother of Ian, Gordon Fontaine, who unfortunately didn’t find any good waves in the final, finished in fourth. Vincent Primel followed in the third spot, and then it was really close between Aurelien Jacob (2008 champ) and the young Surfer from Reunion Island with Brittany Roots, Kieran Bullard. Finally Kieran took the cake, and 400€ cash with a big smile! Congrats Kieran!!!!

Which meant Aurelien Jacob had to settle with a second place finish. After an 11 hour non-stop contest, the prize ceremony started under a light rain, and all the brave people that stayed on the beach all day long went home with ton of prizes and goodies. Thank you’s go out to: Volcom who offered food and drinks that night in the pub L’ATAO AMAN for a long party….

Pour la quatrième année consécutive, nous sommes de retour en Bretagne sur la plage de Crozon Morgat. Le week end du 21-22 Aout a été le plus chaud et ensoleillé de l’été sur toute la France, à une exception prête… la Bretagne ! Où le temps fut maussade, avec un léger crachin, du vent d’ouest, et une température n’excédant pas les 20°.

Mais les Bretons ont un secret pour nous réchauffer, c’est leur légendaire hospitalité, qui une fois de plus s’est vérifiée, et malgré le temps c’est toujours un réel bonheur de revenir à Crozon. En ce frisquet samedi matin, près de 100 bretons sont présents pour les inscriptions, où ils peuvent apprécier un petit déjeuner avec boissons chaudes et brioches au menu, servi par deux charmantes hôtesses, Charlotte du shop ABSOLUTE SURF SHOP, et Valérie de VOLCOM.

Même si nous n’avons pas été chanceux avec le temps, nous l’avons été avec les vagues avec le premier vrai swell depuis de nombreuses semaines qui nous proposa des vagues d’un bon mètre tout au long du week end. Le premier Heat fut lancé à 09H du matin, le dernier à 20h, pour 11H de contest non stop !

Ce fut une longue journée où on put apprécier :
- La marée changeait 3 fois, passant de marée basse à marée haute à marée basse.
- Un stagiaire avec un homard sur le dos pour un drôle de rodéo.
- Plus de 10 paquets de farine vidés
- Un concours de Air Guitar avec les pieds dans l’eau.
- Plus de 130 sandwichs mangés.

Comme d’habitude, la première catégorie à l’eau fut les Grom’s, qui sont les plus ponctuels pour les inscriptions (c’est toujours plus compliqué d’avoir tous les Open à 8h un samedi matin !) et motivés pour surfer dans n’importe quel type de conditions. Sans surprise, Harry Timson et Charly Quivront du team Volcom, et les deux locaux, Adrien Boadec et Tim Faujour composent la finale.

Au final c’est le britannique Harry Timson, qui grâce à un surf puissant et mature, remporte le trophée devant son pote Charly Quivront, qui n’a pas eu de chance dans son choix de vagues, mais qui se consola avec le Best Trick Electric pour un gros reverse. Tout comme en Grom’s, pas de surprise en Junior, avec deux des meilleurs jeunes surfers Français en finale, Ian Fontaine et Gaspard Larsonneur, le tout jeune Léo Latourte, 15ans, finaliste l’an dernier en Grom’s et Augustin Graignic.

Ian, second l’année dernière, prend sa revanche cette année, et remporte facilement le trophée en forme de bouteille de cidre (qu’il s’est empressé d’ouvrir !) devant un des plus grands espoirs bretons, Gaspard et Léo Latourte. La catégorie Girl commence directement en demi, et les filles ont attendu pendant des heures avant leur première série, merci pour leur patience.

Les deux dernières vainqueurs, Lena Le Frapper (2009), et Lola Boutin (2008) se retrouvent logiquement en finale, et au final c’est Lena qui remporte son deuxième Mullet Fish consécutif devant Lorene Jezequel qui chippe la seconde place à Lola, et la très jeune Charlotte Billon. Le dernier heat de la journée est la finale Open, sans le vainqueur 2009, le landais Thomas Esquillot, qui perd en ¼ de final, surpris par la fraîche température de l’eau et par le très bon niveau, mais qui s’et vengé le samedi soir au cours d’une bonne soirée !

La finale 2010 a été la plus relevée de ces quatre dernières années, composée du meilleur surfer de toute la compétition et frère de Ian, Gordon Fontaine, qui malheureusement ne trouva aucune bonnes vagues en finale. Vincent Primel finit 3ème, et ce fut très serré pour la victoire finale entre le vainqueur 2008, Aurélien Jacob, et le jeune réunionnais, aux origines bretonnes, Kieran Bulard.

Et finalement c’est ce dernier qui tout sourire remporte le Mullet Fish 2010 avec les 400€ cash. Bravo Kieran !!!! Après 11h non stop de compétition, la remise des prix fut lancée sous une légère bruine et tous les courageux qui sont restés tout au long de la journée, sont repartis avec des cadeaux et goodies !

Pour remercier tout le monde, Volcom proposa de quoi se restaurer et à boire pour tout le monde au bar l’ATAO AMAN, où la soirée se finit bien tard pour certains…Un grand merci au shop ABSOLUT SURF SHOP, qui a encore bossé dur tout le week end, à la mairie de Crozon, Ewen et Yves pour la vidéo et photos, ELECTRIC et SEVENTYONE PERCENT.
