San Miguel Pro Zarautz Steps into Top Gear with another Excellent Day of Action

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 September, 2010 : - - Zarautz, Basque Country – The San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel kept its momentum going with another great day of competitive surfing that saw the final 16 competitors decided in excellent 3-4ft (1.2m) waves at the main event site in Zarautz.

Competition kicked off early this morning with the completion of the remaining heats of Round Two followed immediately by Rounds Three and Four to finish off another marathon day of competitive surfing. Huge crowds flocked to the beach to enjoy the hot summer weather and to cheer on their favourite surfers.

The Gabriel Medina (BRA) 16, show hit Zarautz again with the young goofy-footer giving two floorless displays of the kind of surfing only he can do. Looking totally relaxed, catching many waves and obviously enjoying the excellent waves on offer Medina was untouchable on his way to tomorrow’s final day of competition.

With a 16.50 heat total this morning and a 17.96 heat total this afternoon which included a 9.63, Medina cruised through both his heats and has left a clear impression that he is firm favourite for this year’s San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel title.

“It is very good fun out there and I got two really good lefts so I am happy to win the heat. It was a hard heat but I just surfed my waves and I want to surf again tomorrow in the contest in these waves.”

In the same heat Gony Zubizarreta (ESP) placed third despite obtaining the highest single heat score of the event, a 9.77 out of a possible 10 on his first wave. After having literally destroyed a long right-hander from start to finish with a series of forehand smashes, Zubizarreta waited in vain for a second, backup wave which never eventuated. Catching a small inside wave in a last ditched attempt Zubizarreta definitely experienced one of the hardest ways to bow out of competition.

After heat nº2 of Round Four, Jayke Sharp (AUS) commented “Now that was stressful!!!” after his nail-biter for second place against Junior Faria (BRA). Having posted a, 9.40 out of a possible 10, early this morning, Faria was in hot form and set to attack. Sitting in third, Sharp jumped to second with one minute remaining and headed back out to defend his position. In a final exchange Faria got back his spot only momentarily as Sharp boosted an air-reverse to secure his pass into Round Five.

“That was so hard out there it was unbelievable,” began Sharp. “I got that score and I had to get back out there and I saw Junior (Faria) take off on the first one so I had to go on the next.”

“I thought my wave was going to allow me to get a few more pumps in but it closed really quickly. I knew I had to go big so I just threw it up there and it came off for me, so I am stoked to make it to the final day.”

William Cardoso (BRA) found himself having to change tactics during his slow 25-minute clash. With the tidal changes and a rare lull between the sets, Cardoso went hunting on new grounds to get the scores he needed. Getting his scores on his last two waves of his tally, Cardoso advances and keeps his record of consistent results during the ASP European summer leg intact.

“The heat was good for me even though there were not many waves in my heat. The tide is changing and it is not like it was this morning. The right was not going so I changed my tactics a little bit and got those two lefts in the end and I won the heat.”

With repeat performances from last week’s event, Tim Boal (FRA), Sebastien Zietz (HAW) and Heitor Alves (BRA) find themselves competing on the last day of the official waiting period at the San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel.

“Surfing tomorrow is a lot easier, man on man,” commented Boal. “There are only two guys in the water and there are waves for everyone. So we have to wait and see if there are still some waves for tomorrow which would be good to see.”

The swell is predicted to slightly overnight with a first-call tomorrow for the final day of competition at 08:30am for a possible start at 09:00am to heat nº1 of Round Five of the San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel. Up first will be William Cardoso (BRA) against Jayke Sharp (AUS).

Surfers competing at the San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel are looking for valuable ASP World Ranking Points and for the European contingent they are at stop nº 8 of 12 on the ASP European Men’s Series which also has points up for grabs.
