Rush Surf Queensland Junior Surfing Titles event one concludes with a bang!
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 September, 2010 : - - Gold Coast, Queensland, Sunday 5th September 2010: FOUR elite Queensland junior surfers today edged one step closer to realising their dreams of winning a state title, after securing victories in the opening event of the 2010 Rush Surf Queensland Junior Surfing Titles. Rush Surf Queensland State Junior Titles - Event One Results U/18 Boys: Sol Pereira-Ryan (Snapper Rocks, Qld) U/16 Boys: Kai Hing (Wurtulla, Qld) U/18 Girls: Amiya Doyle (Coolangatta, Qld) U/16 Girls: Naomi McCarthy (Currumbin, Qld) With a slight increase in swell overnight, the high performance waves on offer at Southport Spit (Gold Coast, Qld) provided an ideal platform for competitors to showcase their skills, producing a perfect ending to the first of two series events. In the blue ribbon U/18 Boys final, Snapper Rocks dynamo Sol Pereira-Ryan blew his rivals out of the water on his very first wave, bagging a telling 9.17 (out of a possible 10) before backing it up with an 8.73, registering a heat winning combined two-wave total of 17.90 (out of a possible 20) Pereira-Ryan defeated Hayden Welch (Currumbin, Qld – 11.43), Hamish Whillans (Burleigh Heads, Qld – 8.23) and Tom Hatcher (Nobbys Beach, Qld – 7.24) who finished second to fourth respectively. “I’m really happy to get a good result today, hopefully it puts me in a good position to make the Queensland team heading into the second event of the series on the Sunshine Coast,” said Pereira-Ryan. “I got a good opening ride and then tried to wait for the right wave to come, but started to get too nervous so I just went back to my natural game and it seemed to work for me,” he said. Meanwhile, Kai Hing (Wurtulla, Qld), proved too strong for his rivals in the final of the U/16 Boys division registering a winning combined two-wave heat total of 14.36 (out of a possible 20). In the dying moment of the 20 minute encounter, Hing shot into the lead ahead of his Sunshine Coast counterpart Hayden Cervi (Sunrise Beach, Qld) after Cervi was penalised for an interference on another competitor. However, Cervi went on to finish second with a combined two-wave heat total of 12.17 ahead of another Sunshine Coast surfer Harry Bryant (Sunshine Beach, Qld – 11.14) and Izak Clifford (Marcus Beach, Qld – 10.30) who finished third and fourth respectively. Amiya Doyle (Coolangatta, Qld) made an impressive start to her series campaign, winning the U/18 Girls Division as Queensland’s best up-and-coming female surfers impressed onlookers and judges alike. Posting a combined two-wave heat score of 12.26 (out of a possible 20) in the final, Doyle edged out her twin sister Brodie by less than one point (12.26 to 11.27) with the duo proving to be too strong for Bridget McCulloch (Alexandra Headland, Qld – 9.83) and Eden Putland (Currumbin, Qld – 7.97). Not to be outdone, Naomi McCarthy (Currumbin, Qld) took out today’s U/16 Girls division ahead rising Palm Beach star Kiani Dobbyn, Coolum’s Isabella Nichols and Palm Beach’s Ellie Brooks. The Rush Surf Queensland State Junior Titles is a two-event series providing the exclusive qualification pathway for the state’s elite juniors vying for prestigious state titles and selection in Queensland’s surfing team, with the series’ top competitors travelling to Phillip Island (Victoria) in November for the Australian Junior Surfing Titles. Event two of the series will be held on the Sunshine Coast on October 9-10. The Queensland State Junior Titles is a key stepping stone in Surfing Queensland’s development pathway, with the likes of Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Bede Durbidge some of the high profile athletes who’ve previously competed in this series.
