NSSA Hawaii Open and Explorer event #4 goes off
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 September, 2010 : - - NSSA Hawaii Event # 4 went off on the Island of Maui at Lahaina Harbor on September 4th and 5th. The weather was stunning however the surf was challenging with waves coming through in the one foot range for our hungry competitors.
Regardless of the small waves, we had no complaints by the parents or surfers because the vibe on Maui is so good and positive. The tricky one foot wave conditions didn’t stop the surfers from showing off and their skills. It’s not surprising that Maui locals did some damage in the major divisions while the event also brought to the forefront a couple stand-out first time finalists. In a breakout performance.
Maui’s Tosh Peila used a little local knowledge to rip his way to his first finals appearance in the Open Men’s. In the final, there was no stopping Tosh as he took it all the way to the top scoring a huge and impressive finals victory. Maui up-and-comer Kain “Big Country” Daly claimed a big double win in the Open Juniors and Explorer Mens. Tao Pou from was another one first time NSSA Hawaii finalist taking fifth in the Explorer Boys division.
Despite the miniscule conditions, surfers were going for broke and putting high scores on the board. Jesse Guglielmana was in form and exploded on a wave in his Explorer Men’s heat posting the event’s only perfect 10. Guglielmana surfed strong making two finals nailing first place in the Explorer Juniors and fifth in the Explorer Mens.
Explorer Men’s runner-up Kylen Yamakawa also lit up the scoreboard posting a near perfect 9.5. The new Explorer Super Groms division was off and running for the first time in NSSA Hawaii competition. Marco Rista took command in both 10 & under categories taking double wins in the Super Groms and Open Mini Groms.
The surf was tiny but the Women’s competitors were shredding. Tatiana Weston Webb took the win in the Open Womens and Moana Jones ripped into the first place slot of the Explorer Womens. Bailey Nagy showed her skills in the small wave conditions taking first place in the Explorer Girls.
Hard work and determination paid off for Kahanu Delovio, who has been competing in the NSSA Hawaii program for three years. Kahanu made her first Explorer Girls final finishing in third place. She also received the Stand-Out Award for her unrelenting effort, surfing in five divisions, never giving up and always having a smile on her face. In a NSSA Hawaii first, the contest witnessed an all-female Open and Explorer Longboard finals! There was a heavy sister rivalry in both heats with younger sister Makani Adric taking the win in the Open Longboard while big sister Kui Adric settled the score securing the victory in the Explorer Longboard.
NSSA Hawaii would like to say Mahalo to Papa John and Aunty Donna for once again all the killer grinds. Also, to Aunty Amy and the rest of the staff and our great judging panel! Big mahalos to the Pioneer Inn for another great stay! NSSA Hawaii Sponsors: Xcel, Aloha Kine, Bubble Gum, Kalani Robb, Jason Nalu Bogle, Surfco Hawaii, ASP Hawaii and the Honu Group.
