Nico von Rupp qualifies for World Junior Surfing Championship

20-Year-Old successful at Ferrolterra Movistar Pantin Classic, Spain

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 September, 2010 : - - German Nicolaus von Rupp secured his qualification for the World Junior Surfing Championship in Indonesia and Australia (2010/11) by competing at Ferrolterra Movistar Pantin Classic, Spain. The 20-year-old is one among only a few German surfers standing their ground on an international level, and is also the only German currently in the Top 10 of the ASP Europe ’ (WQS) men’s ranking  at the qualification end of August 2010.

The contest in Pantin, Spain took place from 24th to 29th August and represents the seventh of overall twelve stops of the European Series, organized by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP). European surfers compete in the series to collect points for their title as Men’s European Champion. However, internationally recognized names were lined up as well to restock their score in the ASP World Ranking.

In Pantin, Nico was faced with some of the WQS’s strongest surfers: Brasilians Pedro Henrique and Jean Da Silva are both experts for smaller waves, as well as  Nat young from the USA. The German talent, one of the youngest in this years WQS, nonetheless asserted himself with a score of 13.34.

“Having the qualification for the World Championship under my belt at this point is a great feeling” Nico von Rupp’s comments on the outcome. “I wasn’t really counting on it, because especially the Brazilian competition trains a lot with smaller waves and that was an advantage on their side. Obviously, luck was on my side at the end to qualify for the World Junior Surfing Championship anyhow.”

About  Nico von Rupp:
Nicolaus von Rupp (born 1990) grew up as the son of a German-American father and a Swiss-Portuguese mother, near Praia Grande in Portugal. It was there where, even as a 10-year-old, he trained as often as possible and celebrated first successes at contests. Among the highlights of his career are the 2nd place at ASP European Junior Tour (2007), 5th place at Billabong ASP World Junior Championships (2008) and 3rd place at World Qualifying Series (WQS) Protest Vendee Pro (2009). Nico took his final exam at school in Lisbon, speaks five languages fluently and will start studying marketing in the near future. Next to surfing, the sports talent is deeply committed to the Humanitarian Landmine Disposal Foundation (HDLF) which was set up by his family.

Nico von Rupp qualifiziert sich für Surf-WM der Junioren

20Jähriger erfolgreich bei Ferrolterra Movistar Pantin Classic in Spanien

Der Deutsche Nicolaus von Rupp hat sich am 29. August bei der Ferrolterra Movistar Pantin Classic für die 2010/11 in Indonesien und Australien ausgetragene Surf-Weltmeisterschaft der Junioren qualifiziert.

Der 20Jährige ist einer von nur wenigen hiesigen Surfern, die sich auf internationalem Level erfolgreich behaupten und steht zur Zeit als einziger Deutscher in den Top 10 im Männer-Ranking der World Qualifying Series (WQS).

Der Wettbewerb in Pantin, Spanien fand vom 24. bis 29. August statt und stellte die siebte von insgesamt zwölf Stationen der von der Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ausgerichteten European Series dar. Europäische Surfer treten in dieser Serie an, um Punkte für den Titel als European Champion der Männer zu sammeln. Aber auch internationale Größen waren mit am Start, um ihr Punktekonto im ASP World Ranking aufzustocken.

In Pantin sah sich Nico einigen der stärksten Surfer der WQS gegenüber: Pedro Henrique und Jean Da Silva aus Brasilien sind beide Experten für kleine Wellen und dem starken Nat Young aus den USA . Als  Neuling in der WQS behauptete sich das deutsche Talent dennoch mit einer Punktzahl von 13,34.

„Es ist ein tolles Gefühl, jetzt schon die Qualifikation für die WM in der Tasche zu haben”, freut sich Nico von Rupp über das Ergebnis. „Damit hatte ich eigentlich nicht gerechnet, denn gerade die brasilianische Konkurrenz trainiert viel öfter mit kleinen Wellen und hat dadurch einen Vorteil. Offensichtlich war das Glück trotzdem auf meiner Seite.“

Über Nico von Rupp:
Nicolaus von Rupp (geb. 1990) wuchs als Sohn eines dt.-amerikanischen Vaters und einer schweizerisch-portugiesischen Mutter nahe der Praia Grande in Portugal auf. Bereits als 10Jähriger trainierte er dort so oft wie möglich und feierte direkt erste Erfolge bei Wettbewerben. Zu den Highlights seiner sportlichen Karriere zählen der 2. Platz bei der ASP European Junior Tour (2007), der 5. Platz bei den Billabong ASP World Junior Championships (2008) und der 3. Platz bei der World Qualifying Series (WQS) Protest Vendee Pro (2009). Nico hat in Lissabon das Abitur absolviert und wird demnächst Marketing studieren. Neben dem Surfen engagiert sich das fünf Sprachen fließend sprechende Sporttalent außerdem leidenschaftlich für die von seiner Familie ins Leben gerufene Humanitarian Landmine Disposal Foundation (HDLF).
