Delpero Takes Runner-up in Oxbow ASP World Longboard Championship | Results/Photos/Videos etc
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 November, 2010 : - - French athlete Antoine Delpero (Biarritz, FRA), made the final of this year’s Oxbow ASP World Longboard Championship in Makaha, Hawaii, the talented longboarder failing to clinch his maiden world champion crown against inform veteran Duane Desote (Oahu, HAW).
Only non-Hawaiian competitor in the Semifinals of the ASP World Longboard title deciding event, Delpero stormed through the early rounds of competition eliminating Brazil’s Alex Salazar in Round 2, before knocking out Californian threat Taylor Jensen (USA) in the Quarterfinals and past three-time ASP World Longboard Champion Rusty Keaulana (HAW) in Semifinal No. 2.
“I did my very best and I’m happy with my result,” Delpero said. “I enjoyed Makaha. Being out there with only one other guy and looking at the beautiful mountains and having great waves, it was a great event for me.”
Delpero, who ended runner-up to Desoto with a good 13.53 point heat total, managed to step-up against the world’s best longboarders through the week of competition, the Marseille native using his now solid experience to comfortably face the local knowledge and tactics up to the final battle of the event.
Finishing inside the world’s top 3 for the third consecutive year, Delpero once again proved he had the skills and talent to reach what remains his major goal, the ASP World Longboard Champion’s crown. Runner-up in 2008, World No. 3 in 2009 and now 2010 ASP World Longboard No. 2, Delpero’s international career remains unique for French and European surfing in general, and there are good hopes the popular stylish athlete soon comes-up to clinch the crown.
“Antoine (Delpero) once again makes Europe proud and he is one of our best amabassadors for Europea surfing across the world,” ASP Europe President David Mailman said. “To do well against the Hawaiians in their backyard is tough so congratulations to Antoine for his great result.”
Youngest athlete of the event to reach the Semifinals, Delpero’s solid classic and progressive longboarding makes him a potential No. 1 in the upcoming years. Check out all results, videos and photos of the Oxbow ASP World Longboard Championship through aspworldtour.com
