Odirlei Coutinho wins the SuperSurf Internacional at Xangri-La, in Brazil

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 May, 2011 : - - Atlandia, Xangri-La -- The Brazilian Odirlei Coutinho, 31,  claimed his first win at the ASP World 5-Star 2011 SuperSurf Internacional at Xangri-La, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. In an exciting final that saw the experienced goofy footer turning the heat in the last minute over finalists Ruda Carvalho, 23, from Brazil, who was leading the whole heat, Leandro Usuna, 23, from Argentina, and former ASP Dream Tour surfer Peterson Rosa, 36, in good 3-4 foot waves at Praia de Atlantida.

“The contest was awesome, really extreme, I almost had my wrist broken Yesterday (Saturday) when I fell from the jet sky, but today everything went right for me, I turned the final heat in the last minute to win my first ASP event”, said Odirlei Coutinho. “I offer this win to my mother, my father, all my family and all the people from Rio Grande do Sul who supported me during all the week. I also would like to thank all the jet sky crew which worked fine during the whole contest, especially in the more critical situations”.

Odirlei also commented on the lack of waves in the final, with sets taking too long to come through. “I decided to sit out the back waiting, and that decision really paid off. Ruda (Carvalho) was leading the heat but I took the best positioning for the right hander that could give me the advantage in the end, and that’s what happened less than one minute to finish the heat. He (Ruda) even paddled for the wave, but I was better positioned for it. Thanks God”.

The final started at 1 p.m. with cloudy skies and long lulls. Odirlei Coutinho took the first wave, a closed out one. Ruda Carvalho was greeted with a good one and posted the first good score of the match, a 6.67 pts ride to establish the lead early in the heat. The sets started to come more regularly within the last 10 minutes to finish the heat.

Ruda Carvalho finds another left hander and puts a back up score of 4.33 pts under his belt to keep the lead. Odirlei reaction starts with him posting a 6.67 pts score on a good left where he threw a series of strong turns, while Peterson Rosa and Leandro Usuna were still sitting on the outside without finding any wave.

Peterson Rosa took his first ride only with less than five minutes remaining in the heat, and sadly for him a close out one. Also Leandro Usuna took off in a poor wave. But Odirlei Coutinho stayed firm waiting on the outside when within less than one minute to finish the heat he took off on a set wave, and with a vengeance he attacked the lip powerfully and finished the ride with a bullshit close out reentry to earn a 7.83 pts from the judges to confirm his first ASP win marking a solid 14.16 pts heat total over Ruda Carvalho’s 11.00 pts, Leandro Usuna’s 5.13 and 4.93 of Peterson Rosa.

“I was focused to win this contest, but a second place is also a great result”, said Ruda Carvalho, who earned $ 8,000. “I lost the title on that right. Odirlei (Coutinho) was on the inside position and the wave was perfect. It was my first World Tour final and a second place was also good for me”.

The contest started at 7 am in this decisive Sunday on smaller but cleaner waves compared to yesterday’s washing machine like conditions. The Argentinean Leandro Usuna took advantage of the conditions to post the only perfect 10 pts ride of the event for a fantastic tube riding, the first for an Argentinean surfer in an ASP event.

“I’m stoked. I spent about 10 minutes without getting any wave”, said Leandro Usuna, “I paddled towards the inside just not to finish the heat without any ride, when that magic wave came from nowhere. Maybe somebody sent it from Mar del Plata (Usuna’s home break)”.

In the coming days from May 31 to June 5 is set to happen another stop of the 2011 SuperSurf Internacional, ASP Prime event, with prize money of $ 250,000 and 6,500 points for the World Ranking and the ASP South American Circuit. The event is going to be held at Praia da Vila, Imbituba, Santa Catarina State.

The ASP 5-Star SuperSurf Internacional event is produced by Editora Abril with the sponsorship of Peugeot Automobile. Odirlei Coutinho vence o SuperSurf em Xangri-Lá

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 May, 2011 : - - Atlandia, Xangri-La -- O paulista Odirlei Coutinho, 31 anos, festejou sua primeira vitória no Circuito Mundial no SuperSurf Internacional do Rio Grande do Sul. Na grande final da etapa inédita do ASP World 5-Star em Xangri-Lá, ele garantiu o título numa onda surfada no último minuto da bateria que foi toda liderada pelo baiano Rudá Carvalho, 23. O argentino Leandro Usuña, 23, tirou a única nota 10 do campeonato num tubo incrível na semifinal e terminou em terceiro lugar, com Peterson Rosa, 36, recordista com oito vitórias em etapas da ASP South America, ficando em quarto no pódio da Praia de Atlântida.

Nos próximos dias 31 de maio a 05 de junho tem outra etapa do SuperSurf Internacional 2011, esta válida pelo ASP World Prime com premiação de 250.000 dólares e 6.500 pontos para o ranking mundial e para o Sul-americano da ASP South America. O evento será realizado na Praia da Vila, em Imbituba, sul de Santa Catarina, que até o ano passado foi sede da etapa brasileira do ASP World Tour. A prova nível 5 estrelas de Xangri-Lá ofereceu 120.000 dólares e valeu 2.000 pontos.

“O campeonato foi animal, condições extremas, ontem (sábado) quase quebrei meu pulso aqui quando voei do jetski lá no fundo, mas hoje deu tudo certo, fui campeão na última onda, mar super difícil e toda a galera está de parabéns, porque surfaram muito também”, disse Odirlei Coutinho. “ Quero oferecer essa vitória a minha mãe, meu pai, toda minha família e também pra galera aqui de Porto Alegre, de Xangri-Lá, que nos receberam muito bem. Também quero parabenizar o pessoal do jetski que trabalhou muito bem durante os dias de mar complicado aqui. Realmente o campeonato foi um sucesso”.

Odirlei também comentou sobre a calmaria que marcou a bateria final, com as séries demorando muito para entrar na Praia de Atlântida justamente na decisão do título. “Eu decidi ficar lá no fundo esperando e foi lá que entrou a esquerda que foi minha primeira onda boa. O Rudá (Carvalho) estava ganhando, mas eu estava na prioridade da direita que me deu a vitória, remei junto com ele e joguei tudo na junção, que aqui é bem difícil porque a bancada é muito rasa e foi show de bola. Deu altas ondas no campeonato e a galera daqui é demais, só tenho que agradecer a todos”.

TUBO NOTA 10 - O domingo decisivo do SuperSurf Internacional começou as 7 horas no mar bem diferente das condições extremas do sábado. No entanto, as ondas de 3-4 pés apresentavam melhor formação e alguns belos tubos foram surfados durante o dia. O próprio campeão pegou um. Mas o melhor mesmo foi o do argentino Leandro Usuña na semifinal, que valeu a única nota 10 do campeonato. Aliás, ele foi o primeiro surfista da Argentina a receber nota máxima em eventos da ASP.

“Estou muito contente. Fiquei uns 10 minutos sem pegar nenhuma onda e não queria sair da bateria sem surfar nada”, contou Leandro Usuña. “O mar muda muito rápido aqui. Fiquei lá fora, não veio nada, aí remei mais pro inside pra surfar. Foi quando entrou aquela onda mágica vinda não sei de onde. Talvez, alguém de Mar Del Plata mandou pra mim. A onda já armou o tubo e botei pra dentro. Eu estava em último na bateria e consegui a classificação com a nota 10”.

CALMARIA NA FINAL - Só que na final, as ondas praticamente sumiram. A bateria decisiva começou às 13 horas, com céu nublado e longas calmarias. Odirlei Coutinho pegou a primeira onda, mas ela fechou rápido. Já Rudá Carvalho foi quem surfou a primeira onda boa, acertou duas manobras fortes numa direita da série e ganhou nota 6,67 para largar na frente na briga pelos 16.000 dólares. As ondas só começaram a bombar quando faltava menos de 10 minutos para terminar a bateria.

Rudá Carvalho acha outra esquerda e repete a dose com duas manobras para se consolidar na ponta com nota 4,33. Odirlei inicia a reação com uma nota 6,33 numa boa esquerda, enquanto Peterson Rosa e Leandro Usuña boiavam sem achar ondas. Peterson pega sua primeira onda nos 5 minutos finais, mas fechou. Leandro entra na seguinte, mas também é fraca. Já Odirlei pega uma direita da série a 1 minuto do fim, acerta uma manobra muito forte e joga tudo na junção para arrancar nota 7,83. Com ela, confirmou sua primeira vitória em etapas da ASP com 14,16 pontos, contra 11,00 de Rudá Carvalho, 5,13 de Leandro Usuña e 4,93 das duas melhores ondas de Peterson Rosa na final.

“Eu estava focado pra vencer esse campeonato. Consegui chegar na final e o segundo lugar também é um ótimo resultado”, falou Rudá Carvalho, que faturou 8.000 dólares pelo vice-campeonato. “Perdi o título naquela direita. O Odirlei estava na prioridade (de escolher a onda) e a onda veio em cima dele. A onda era perfeita, ele foi lá e fez a nota. Eu ainda tentei reverter o resultado, mas o mar está difícil, quase não entrou ondas na final e estou super feliz pelo resultado. Foi minha primeira final no Circuito Mundial e o segundo lugar também foi bom para mim”.

RECORDES MANTIDOS - O paranaense Peterson Rosa não conseguiu aumentar o seu recorde de oito vitórias em etapas da ASP South America, mas saiu de Xangri-Lá renovado pelas brilhantes atuações no mar difícil de Atlântida. Foi dele o maior placar do SuperSurf Internacional, 17,10 pontos com as notas 8,60 e 8,50 que somou em uma das suas baterias no sábado.

“Infelizmente não consegui me achar no mar, não veio onda pra mim, mas estou amarradão por ter voltado a fazer uma final, subir no pódio de novo mesmo com 36 anos de idade contra essa molecada toda que está arrebentando”, disse Peterson Rosa, que confirmou sua participação no SuperSurf Internacional Prime que será realizado nos dias 31 de maio a 05 de junho na Praia da Vila, em Imbituba, litoral sul de Santa Catarina.

O SuperSurf Internacional 2011 é produzido pela Editora Abril com patrocínio da Peugeot e esta etapa do ASP World 5-Star também contou com o apoio da marca Nicoboco, Prefeitura Municipal de Xangri-Lá, Federação Gaúcha de Surf e da Associação de Surf e Proteção de Atlântida. Big surf swamps contest structure at SuperSurf Internacional at Xangri-La, in Brazil  |  Portugues 

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 May, 2011 : - - Atlandia, Xangri-La -- Once again a big swell hit the north coast of Rio Grande do Sul State, and the extreme surfing conditions turned the ASP World 5-Star 2011 SuperSurf Internacional at Xangri-La into a real challenge for the surfers. The waves this morning were already breaking behind the Atlantida Pier.

With sets in the 6-8 feet (2.0–2.5 meter) range, the first heat reached the water twice, at 8 am the first attempt to run the heat was unsuccessful due to the fact that the judges couldn’t spot the jersey’s colors. Owing to the heavy conditions today, organizers run only 11 heats of the round of 48 surfers out of twelve, leaving for tomorrow the 12th heat.

Also the water started to reach the contest structure, forcing the organizer to interrupt the contest for safety reasons. At 10 am the first heat of the round of 48 surfers finally started and the surfer from Fernando de Noronha Island, Patrick Tamberg, posted a 9.17 pts score for a big right hander express were he threw a series of impressive big carving turns in the critical session.

“It’s pretty hard out there, the size is Ok, but the currents are really heavy”, said Patrick Tamberg, after winning the heat over second place Charlie Brown, Vicente Romero in third and Felipe Teixeira in fourth. He also commented on the experience he went through early morning during the first attempt to run the first heat.

“It was quite complicated, really difficult, the judges could not tell the colors, and who was riding the waves, so I think they did the right thing. The waves now (after 10 am) are way more ride able, and besides that the jet ski is helping a lot, congratulations for the guys who are piloting it”, said Patrick Tamberg.

Peterson Rosa, the seasoned former ASP World Tour surfer showed an overwhelming return to form. The “Bronco” asserted his supremacy over ASP South America 2009 Pro Junior Champion, Alex Ribeiro (BRA), who came in second, Ricardo Ferreira (BRA) and Adilton Mariano (BRA), with the highest combined heat total score of 17.10 pts out of 20 pts, after posting two excellent scores, the first was an 8.60 pts followed by an 8.50 pts.

Another highlight of this challenging day was Robson Santos; he slammed a 9.33 pts attacking a huge set wave with a combination of big turns, which ended up being his only good score on the heat. Robson had to rely on a 1.80 pts back up score, even though he still defeated Franklin Serpa and Bruno Galini to advance to the next round by winning the heat along with second place finisher John Max.

“I only knew about my scores after leaving the water”, confessed Robson Santos. “I’m stoked by winning this heat in such heavy conditions, I had a hard time out there, believe me”.

Of the four international surfers who competed on this Saturday, only Manuel Selman (CHL) did not advance to the round of 24 of the SuperSurf Internacional at Xangri-La. The Argentinean Leandro Usuna and Frenchman Vincent Duvignac went second in their heats; meanwhile the American Chris Waring won the closing match of this true challenging Saturday.

Contest starts tomorrow at 7 am with the last heat of round of 48 surfers. Also the competition format was changed to four man heats to the final, and the winner should be know at mid day at Praia de Atlantida, Xangri-La.
