11th Annual Surftech Jay Race returns to Capitola

SUP Updates

Jay Race will feature 12-mile long course and 2-mile short course races

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 June, 2012 : - - The 11th Annual Surftech Jay Race presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection returns to Capitola Beach in Santa Cruz, CA on Saturday June 23rd.  Prone paddlers, stand up paddlers and swimmers from around the country are in the midst of their preparation for this world-class annual paddleboard race.

The 2012 "Jay Race" will feature 12-mile long course and 2-mile short course races. For those who like "team sports" you'll love the highly anticipated Covewater SUP Relay (although we're including prone paddlers this year!). The kids races will have a new format where kids will paddle to various destinations, collecting "Live Like Jay" wristbands along the way. The wristbands can be traded in at the end of the race for raffle tickets!

New for 2012 is the Quiksilver Waterman Challenge. This three discipline race will challenge swimmers, prone paddlers and stand up paddlers to determine who are the top over-all male and female waterman of the 2012 Jay Race!

The over-all mission of the Jay Race is to encourage paddlers of all ages and genders to take to the water for friendly competition, camaraderie and to remember legendary Santa Cruz waterman Jay Moriarity. All of the proceeds from the Jay Race are donated to our local Junior Lifeguard organizations for scholarships and equipment.

The 2012 Surftech Jay Race presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection will feature the Quiksilver Waterman Challenge!!! This action packed event begins with a 500m swim followed by a 1000m prone (12' stock) paddleboard leg and finishes up with a 1500m SUP (12'6" SUP) leg!

The picturesque Jay Race long course will test an athletes endurance as they depart the shores of Capitola Beach and paddle outside the kelp beds, past the Santa Cruz Harbor and Beach Boardwalk. The Course takes a hard left turn at Steamer Lane and then out to meet the seals at the mile buoy. From there it's a straight shot back to Capitola Beach to complete the 12-mile course.

For first timers or those who prefer a shorter "sprint style" race, the 2-Mile Short Course is a fun out and back race that takes athletes out to the edge of the kelp beds, in to the Capitola Wharf, back out to the kelp bed and back in to the finish at Capitola Beach.
The Covewater SUP Relay will consist of three person teams that must include at least one female team member. This event is all about having fun with friends, family members and co-workers! Teams of three traverse a .25 mile loop around a set of strategically placed buoys and run through a beach gauntlet between laps.

KIDS RACES - "Mini Jay Racers"
Jay Race KIDS 12 and under will paddle a short course that's close to shore. Kids will be stopping at various points along the course and collecting "Live Like Jay" bracelets. The "Mini Jay Racer" who collects the most bracelets will be crowned the Mini Jay Race champ! Kids can turn in their bracelets and exchange them for raffle tickets!

Don't miss the Surftech Jay Race After Party and Awards Banquet hosted by the Crow's Nest! Located on the beach at the Santa Cruz Harbor, the Jay Race after party has become one of the favorite post race events of the year! Enjoy an incredible buffet of food and wash it down with beer, wine or soda all while listening to incredible live music from The Shapes featuring Ashley Lloyd!
