2005 Surfer Poll and Video Awards at the Grove 13 Sept

Biggest Names in Surfing, Music and Entertainment Converge at 33rd Annual Event
at The Grove in Anaheim, California, September 13, 2005

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 August, 2005 : - - DANA POINT, Calif., August 8, 2005 - SURFER Magazine, the industry-leading publication published by PRIMEDIA Inc., today announced its "2005 SURFER Poll and Video Awards Presented by American Suzuki Motor Corporation" will take place on September 13, 2005, at The Grove in Anaheim, Calif.  Renowned faces from the worlds of action sports, music and entertainment will converge to honor the best surfers and surf cinematography on an evening that is touted as one of the most prestigious in surfing.  The event will be covered exclusively on and broadcast for the third consecutive year in a one-hour television special on FUEL TV.  Previous years included pre-show and awards highlights, athlete interviews and SURFER Poll history.   Check for airdates and times.

"For nearly four decades now, this annual celebration has been the biggest in the surf world," said SURFER Editor Chris Mauro. "It's our version of the Oscars, except there are no scripts and nothing is rehearsed.  Anything can happen and it usually does."

The SURFER Poll, hosted by sports commentator and X Games personality Sal Masekela, is a unique part of surf culture, giving readers of SURFER Magazine an opportunity to vote for and recognize their favorite 10 male and five female athletes.  Over the years, the SURFER Poll has come to represent the highest honor in the surf world and is the oldest and most anticipated awards show of the year.  An estimated 20,000 voters cast their ballots last year and at least as many are expected to participate this year.  Voting continues until Aug. 15th at  Sure to be another heated battle for the men's number one spot is between last year's winner and current WCT points leader Kelly Slater and last year's second-place winner, current world champion and recent U.S. Open winner Andy Irons.   Former world champion Layne Beachley won the women's category last year.  Other past winners include legendary surfers Tom Curren, Lisa Andersen, Nat Young, Corky Carroll, Phil Edwards and Mark Richards.

The awards ceremony has made an even bigger impact in recent years with the addition of the SURFER Video Awards, which honors the finest in surf filmmaking from the preceding year.  Awards are given in eight categories, ranging from "Best Wipeout," a category that always draws significant "oohs and ahhs" from the crowd, to "Most Radical Maneuver" and "Best Cinematography," to "Photo of the Year" and "Video of the Year."  The Boost Mobile "Breakthrough Performer" award, presented to 12-year-old standout Carissa Moore last year, honors an up-and-coming athlete who has proven they will have an impact on the sport for years to come. The photo and video award recipients, unlike the SURFER Poll awards, are selected by the SURFER Magazine staff.

The 2005 SURFER Poll and Video Awards Presented by American Suzuki expects to draw nearly 2,000 top industry executives, pro surfers, as well as celebrities and other notable personalities.  Past presenters, performers and attendees include: big-wave surfing legends Laird Hamilton and Gerry Lopez, Kathy Kohner-Zuckerman (the real life Gidget), members of the Foo Fighters, Kelly Osbourne, Jack Johnson, Chris Isaak, Bruce Brown (The Endless Summer) and Sanoe Lake (Blue Crush).  Look for special presenters and guest musicians during the 2005 show.
