Day 1: Action Heats Up at the Body Glove Surfbout Presented by Adio

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, San Clemente, Calif. – April 26, 2005 - The prestigious Body Glove Surfbout Presented by Adio kicked off at Lower Trestles this morning under blue skies and light offshore winds.  Slightly inconsistent but glassy 3 to 4 foot waves had expectations running high as competitors checked in for the opening rounds.

Igniting round one, Aaron Cormican gave an impressive performance, taking advantage of a nice left and a following right, he linked a series of backside and frontside hooks that handily allowed him to take the heat and advance into the next round.

In round 2, perhaps the best competition of the day, Sean Hayes and Ted Navarro battled it out.  Ultimately Navarro would prevail, posting an 8.0 and a 9.5 for a combined heat score of 17.5.  After hitting the beach, Navarro commented on his performance.  “I just felt really solid out there,” he said with a smile, “the waves were really good so it was pretty easy to surf well and post solid scores.”

In his second appearance of the day, Aaron Cormican came out looking fired-up and weighed in with a performance that the judges were calling “state of the art” and “futuristic.”  Cormican slammed a few solid scores with an exhaustive vertical face-attack and sealed the win, much to the delight of the crowd, with a huge frontside air reverse.

Bumpy conditions prevailed throughout the afternoon as onshore winds steadily increased, however Lowers continued to hold its shape and stayed highly contestable for the remainder of the day.  Performance levels remained equally as high, especially during the final heat of the day when former Surfbout champ Rob Machado hit the water and dominated with a 9.5 and an 8.93, calmly and smoothly dispatching the competition.

The Body Glove Surfbout Presented by Adio will commence tomorrow at 8am.
Live scoring and updates are available at

Wednesday will be running in the waist to occasional chest high as that south swell combo continues to fade and mixes with some shorter period NW.  Morning heats should get a nice push as the tide comes back up from that -0.8ft low at 6am.  Thursday will be in the waist high+ range with some new SW swell due to show on the small side with size increasing slowly and eventually hitting the shoulder high+ range for Friday and Saturday.  Conditions are looking clean for Wednesday morning.  A weak spring storm is moving ashore to the north and will increase onshore winds later  tomorrow with a slight chance of rain as early as the evening hours.  Thursday expect rain and continued onshore winds with improving conditions for Friday and Saturday.
