After lightning strikes Revolt Surf Series offers double points

Revolt Surf Series stop #2

Ocean Beach Pier, San Diego California

Heavy downpours & lightning strikes

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 July, 2015 - San Diego - After last weekends record storms in San Diego & subsequent cancellation of stop #2 in the Revolt Surf Series, The RSSS has announced that the August 15 date will not only be moved back to the Ocean Beach Pier but the event will offer double points for the athletes. This was the first time in NINE YEARS that the RSSS has been canceled due to weather.

The decision to call Saturday's event was not taken lightly, but heavy downpours & spectacular  lightning strikes in San Diego County ultimately showed the wisdom of the event organizers. "Our only concern is for the safety of our competitors, staff & spectators." said co-founder & contest director Leslie Terhorst, "Not to mention the sponsors... turns out the Red Bull tent is an amazing lightning rod... "

Historical rain amounts fell in a matter of hours which made Saturday the wettest July day in the region’s history and set a record for the wettest July ever. Hundreds of Lightning strikes left Ocean Beach, Point Loma and many other communities without power for the entire day.

Lifeguards issued a Threat Level 3 for Ocean Beach, which called all on-duty lifeguards to take shelter at headquarters. "While the beach was not shut down... we notified the public of the imminent threat,” lifeguards said. “We highly recommend that they leave the area and seek shelter in buildings, away from metal.”

The downpours & following run-off caused an almost immediate pollution slick from San Clemente all the way south to the border. "Not sure about you, but I'm not gonna surf in that stuff, or encourage any of our competitors to chance it. The last thing we want is to cause any of our athletes to get sick or even worse..." said head judge Greg Christenson.

The city honored the permit costs for another date, but only if the event was held on the same beach. "That actually works out great - a lot of businesses in the Ocean Beach area were supporting the July event & they deserve to have a great event in their community." said co Founder Brian Terhorst, "Besides that what would the RSSS - Pier II Pier - Pro Am be with only one pier? - The Pier One Pro Am?

The re-scheduled event will take place on August 15 & will be a DOUBLE POINTS event. Points are awarded to competitors for each event - surfers with the highest accumulation throughout the season receive a beautiful custom trophy, additional prizes & a feature spread in Revolt In Style Magazine. Double points will keep the riders on track for a season finale on September 12 that will be as exciting as any previous year.
