Specialty and amateur semi-finals stoke crowds
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 March, 2015 - The crowds lined the shores of Kingscliff beach today in spectacular sunshine and perfect longboard surf conditions, to watch the hotly contested pro semi-finals and the entertaining specialty and amateur divisions.
One of the day’s highlights was the Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club Retro where Nic Jones was an outstanding competitor and scored a 16.4 against former professional, Jay Phillips, who scored a total 15.67. Phillips started really well with 7.5 but Nic countered with an 8.5 and the backed it up with a 7.9 – causing double damage with his mixture of short board and longboard moves. Phillips last score was an excellent 8.17 but it wasn’t enough to get over Jones’ high score.
Cam Gleave, son of longboard icon Ray Gleave, had a strong win in the 2nd semi-final and was too good for Matt Aldridge and Dalton Shaw. The final will see Nic Jones, Cam Gleave, Jay Phillips and Matt Aldridge take to the waves for an exciting final tomorrow at 12:30pm
The Hobie SUP Pro semi-final 1 was a brilliant contest between Jackson Close - Australian Champion, Timothy Cyprien and Beau Nixon. Semi-final 2 featured James Casey, Justin Holland and Ruben Roxburgh. It was an intense semi-final but Holland was on fire and scored an 8.1 and backed it up with a 9.27 towards the end of the heat. Holland was the outstanding winner of the division and is definitely the man to beat.
In the Pro division, Victoria Vergara, France has caused the upset of the Australian Longboard Surfing Open, by taking out World Champion and local girl Chelsea Williams in a great strategic contest, in the Pretty Shady LQS Women’s Pro.
Karina Rozunko, USA scored a total of 14.1 and easily won against Georgia Young (WA) who scored 6. It will be a truly international final on Sunday at 10:30am NSW time with Rozunko (USA) versing Vergara (FRA).
The WSL LQS Men’s Pro saw Taylor Jensen (USA) receiving the single highest score of the competition to date with a 9.6. He had the best two wave score with an outstanding total of 18.27 and was too good for tournament favourite Edouard Delpero (FRA).
Current World Champion, Harley Ingleby (Emerald Beach, NSW) was too good for Ruben Roxburgh (Evans Head, NSW) and in a tight contest that saw both surfers see-saw with the lead, Ingleby scored 13.67 over Roxburg 11.34. Tomorrow’s final will see a repeat of last years’ final with Ingleby vs Jensen at 10am NSW time.
