Zahli Kelly and Alyssa Lock claim girls divisions

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 December, 2014 - Sunshine Coast, Queensland - With an unexpected increase in swell on the fifth and final day of the Rip Curl Grom Search Presented by Posca, competitors were met with glassy 2-3ft conditions at Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast.

Front runners from the 12 and under girls were first to kick things off with Zahli Kelly (Wooloowin, QLD), Lily O’Sullivan (Currumbin, QLD), Holly Williams (Buddina, QLD) and Raya Campbell (Coolangatta, QLD) instigating the first final.

Bringing with her the ongoing momentum of back to back wins, Zahli Kelly again walked away with the win after defeating her rivals respectively. In the dying minutes of the 12 and under girls final, Zahli Scores an excellent 9.0 ride (out of a possible 10) relegating her from second position into the top spot.

Shortly after the 12 and under girls final, the 14 and under girls wrapped up their Rip Curl Grom Search campaigns with Alyssa Lock convincingly taking out the final against inform surfers Kirra-Belle Olsson (Copacabana, NSW), Zahli Kelly (Wooloowin, QLD) and Kiara Meredith (Barrack Heights, NSW) respectively.

Along with her finalists, Alyssa will go on to compete at the Rip Curl Grom Search National finals next year at North Narrabeen.

In the last heat of the day, the 12 and under boys kicked things off aggressively in their final with all competitors locking in their highest scoring rides within the first five minutes of the twenty minute final. In the end it was Japan’s Arashi Murata who was victorious over fellow counterparts Finn Hill (Avoca Beach, NSW), Dane Pullinger (Cabarita Beach, NSW) and Logan Steinwede (Wagstaffe, NSW).

With Arashi taking home the win from the 12’s division, fellow finalist Logan Steinwede walked home with the Australian Surfing Life Magazines Rising Stars Award.

In addition to Logan’s Rising Star Award, Sophie McCulloch (Alexandra Headland, QLD) took out the Outstanding Performance Award due to the fact of her near perfect 19.97 heat total (out of a possible 20). As recognition, Sophie has scored herself a Firewire Surfboard courtesy of Firewire.

The Australian Rip Curl Grom Search series includes 5 events at key surfing locations around the country followed by a National final at Sydney's famous North Narrabeen.

This year the National Final has been expanded to a 3-day event allowing all divisions to surf it out for the National Title. Winners in the 16's division will go on to represent Australia against the rest of the world at the Grom Search International Final.
