Dalton Lawyers back girls division event at Newcastle Surfest

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 January, 2013 : - - Newcastle, NSW -- For the first time in the history of Surfest there will be a contest for girls aged 16-and-under, thanks to the support of legal firm Dalton Lawyers. On the back of recent phenomenal competitive success of female Australian surfers - including five-time and current womens world champ Stephanie Gilmore and reigning girls world champ Nikki Van Dikj - the competitive future of female surfing in Australia has never looked stronger.

Keen surfer Chris Dalton of Dalton Lawyers said his company was thrilled to create a competitive space for girls surfing, thereby ensuring Surfest was at the forefront of Australian surfing competitions ensuring the broadest possible participation base.

Mr Dalton approached Surfest organiser Warren Smith with a proposal to sponsor and finance the division for girls in conjunction with the Sanbah Cadet Cup. “Dalton Lawyers see this as a perfect opportunity to contribute to the continuing competitive development of younger girls who surf in Newcastle.

"There has been a noticeable increase in the number of young girls surfing in Newcastle and this kind of opportunity will help hone their competitive spirit and also help them feel an important part of Surfest."

Surfest chief Warren Smith said it is pleasing to see a link between the aspirations of young female surfers and the commitment toward their future come together through the sponsorship of Dalton Lawyers in the Sanbah Cadet Cup.  “It's awesome to have a Girls Division in the Sanbah Cadet Cup... Chris has a vision to support girls surfing in Newcastle. He is keen to increase the age division in future events too and that's a terrific confidence boost for the young girls with aspirations to be like Stephanie and Nikki.

"Newcastle has some really good young girl surfers and all they lack is the opportunity to compete at a high level in surfing contests outside their regular monthly contests.
"The ongoing support of Dalton Lawyers will greatly enhance the opportunities for girl surfers to compete at a higher level,” Mr Smith said.

The 2013 Surfest Newcastle Australia features the Burton Toyota Pro (Men’s ASP 6-Star) and the Hunter Ports Women’s Classic (Women’s ASP 6-Star), along with eight supporting events. The event is made possible with the support of Burton Toyota, the Hunter Sports Sports Group, Newcastle City Council and the NSW Government through Destination NSW. Surfest Newcastle Australia is conducted over 12 days from February 13-24 at Merewether beach, a recognised Australian National Surfing Reserve.

Merewether is home to festival patron and Australia’s most accomplished men’s world professional surfing champion, four-time world champion Mark Richards (1979-82) and presents the winner a trophy in his likeness. 2013 marks the festival’s 28th year and with over 800 national and international competitors, Surfest Newcastle Australia is the largest festival of surfing in the southern hemisphere.
