TravelSim Team Australia adds two promising surfers to ISA roster
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 February, 2014 -- Victorian junior surfers, Joe Van Dijk (Phillip Island) and Cody Robinson (Jan Juc) have been selected in TravelSim Team Australia to compete at the VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Ecuador this year.
The annual event has seen some of the top up and coming surfers compete who have gone on to win ASP World Titles including Joel Parkinson and Stephanie Gilmore.
The brother of Women’s ASP World Tour Rookie Nikki Van Dijk, Joe had an excellent 2013, which saw him take out the Under 16 Boys Australian Title and the Duke Kahanamoku award for most promising surfer. These results solidified his case for selection in the team and see him follow in the footsteps of his older sister Nikki who placed second in 2011 in Peru.
Van Dijk is ecstatic with the selection and is excited to head to Ecuador. “I'm so excited to be selected into the team. Not many Victorian’s have made it into the team before so it’s a big achievement.”
“I can’t wait to get to Ecuador. I’ve never been there before so it should be fun, especially having Cody coming along with us.”
Cody Robinson will be competing in the Under 18s division after a strong start to 2014 with Quarter Final results at the ASP Piping Hot Surf Festival in both the Pro Junior and Men’s Division. Robinson has also been in Hawaii for the last month training and competing in a Pro Junior Event with the Quiksilver team.
“I’m so happy and proud to be able to represent Australia at the ISA World Junior Championships” said an excited Robinson.
“I have been training a lot with Adam Robertson along with physically training 3-times per week. I also will be doing a run of Pro Juniors in NSW and QLD which will hopefully help me prepare for the event.”
Surfing Victoria High Performance Manager, Adam Robertson, is stoked to have two Victorians in the team, which is the first time since Adam and Jodie Smith were both selected in the team in 1999.
“It's great to see two of our Victorian surfers in the Australian team. We have had single surfers represent before but it has been awhile since we have had two.”
“After the Aussie Titles in December I was very proud of the Victorian team and their performances. For Joe and Cody to get the call up is fantastic for Surfing Victoria and also the aspiring junior surfers coming up through our state programs."
The full Australian team will be released in the coming weeks. Surfing Australia would like to recognise the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), TravelSim and Be the Influence for their continuing support of the Team Australia Program.
The VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championships will be held at La FAE Beach, Salinas, Ecuador on 5th – 13th April 2014.
