John John lays down high heat score topping Slater
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 September, 2014 - On Wednesday John John Florence scored five nine-point rides in his Round 4 heat at the Hurley Pro. The Hawaiian prodigy logged a near-perfect 19.73 two-wave total in a heat featuring 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater and World No. 7 Adriano De Souza.
Florence sent the crowd into a frenzy, layering flair, torque and impossible rotation to every carve and aerial to put the level of his surfing beyond any question.
Both Slater and De Souza were left needing a combination of scores and were forced to surf again in elimination Round 5 later in the day.
"It’s hard work out there," John John Florence said. "The waves are solid here this year and it's exhausting. I was pretty focused in that heat. I was fortunate enough to be on some really well-shaped waves that allowed me to open up and perform.”
