Surf portion of Southern Cross SUP Festival hits the water
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 April, 2015 - Narrawallee, Australia - The surfing element of the 2015 Ocean and Earth Southern Cross SUP Festival got off to a flying start today in clean two-foot peaks in Narrawallee.
A handful of former Australian and NSW SUP champions all endured the average weather in hope of booking their positions into tomorrow’s final rounds.
Beau Nixon (Tweed Heads, NSW) and Toby Cracknell (Avoca, NSW) lived up to expectations in the Open Mens, showing the same prowess that’s won them Australian and NSW SUP Titles in previous years. Both surfers managed to post impressive scores in the eight-point range to book their positions straight into quarterfinals, which will be surfed tomorrow.
Other Open Mens round one winners included: Ruben Roxburgh (Evans Head), James Casey (Collaroy), Harry Maskell (Wamberal) and Martin Cole (Newport).
2014 Ocean and Earth Southern Cross SUP Festival Over-40 Mens champion Andrew Cassidy (Mona Vale, NSW) posted the highest score of the division, 13.66 (out of a possible 20 points). The Northern Beaches stand-up paddleboarder threw down a healthy combination of massive turns to post the aforementioned score.
Melissa McManus (Woollamia), Terene Black (North Entrance), Lana Hardiman (Newport), Kamilla Grubesic (Eden) all joined the winners circle, claiming first round victories in the Open Womens divisions. All stand-up paddleboarders will compete in their next round tomorrow.
