Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 June, 2015 - Gold Coast - 240 frothing groms, clean 1 metre surf, the Fun Run Colour Dome and loads of Billabong giveaways set the scene for the opening day of the Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp, presented by Flight Centre.

The blue ribbon U/16 Boys division were first to pull on a competition rash shirt and battle it out against some of the best junior surfers Australia and its neighbouring countries has to offer.

The international contingents were early standouts with Kehu Butler (Bay of Plenty, NZ) making light work of his round 1 heat. In another stellar performance Rio Waida (Bali, IND) secured the highest combined wave total of the round with a 17.83 points (out of possible 20 points) score. Both Waida and Butler will carry this confidence through to round two where they will face inform competition.

Also progressing through his U/16 round one heat was Caloundra (QLD) local Noah Kearney who claimed the highest individual wave score of the round with a 9.5 ride (out of possible 10 points) in the opening minutes. Kearney will have his work cut out for him with Sandon Whittaker (Avoca Beach, NSW) also moving directly into round two after claiming victory after an outstanding display of modern surfing.

For both Saturday and Sunday the Fun Run Colour Dome will be set up on beach to give the groms the chance to paint the town red, or at least themselves. The colour dome will be running between 10am and 2pm on the weekend.

As added value the man himself Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo will select one lucky grom to partake in a ‘money can’t buy’ surf trip experience. The winner will be announced by Occy at the presentations on Thursday afternoon.
