Medina to continue his title campaign when action resumes

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 December, 2014 - Banzai Pipeline - With only small surf on offer today and a new swell on the horizon, competition has been called OFF for the day at the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons. Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning to assess conditions and make the next call.

"The swell has dropped off again since yesterday so we are not going to run any heats today," Kieren Perrow, ASP Commissioner, said. "We are expecting the next swell to come in tomorrow and build through the day into Friday so we're shaping up for a good finish. The wind has continued to calm down and become more favorable, which is good news and is reducing the chop on the ocean.

"With the angle of the new swell that’s coming in over the next few days we should see some great waves at Backdoor. We can also expect the sand to wash away and to see some quality waves at Pipeline too. We'll be back tomorrow morning to assess conditions, review the latest swell models and make the next call."

The three World Title contenders, Gabriel Medina (BRA), Mick Fanning (AUS), and Kelly Slater (USA), will surf in elimination Round 3 when competition resumes. Medina will face Vans Triple Crown of Surfing ratings leader Dusty Payne (HAW), Fanning will take on Jeremy Flores (FRA) and Slater will match-up against Alejo Muniz (BRA).

Surfline, official forecaster for the Billabong Pipe Masters, are calling for: A small mix of leftover N swell and some new WNW swell prevails Wednesday as trades ease another notch or two. A new NW swell will rapidly build over the afternoon on Thursday, peak overnight, and trend down through the day on Friday. We expect to see solid surf later Thursday and for the first half of Friday. Strong ENE trades temporarily rebuild Thursday and then ease Friday, with a further decrease in both wind and swell on Saturday.
