Bruce Mackie wins Junior Pro while Dane collects a few finals

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 July, 2012 : - - Bruce Mackie, Monster sponsored, top Bajan Surfer, wins the coveted Junior Pro title at the International Surf Festival held at Toco, Trinidad, May 12-13, 2012. This event is one of the Western Atlantic Surf Series Qualifiers for 2012.

The conditions at Toco were head high, shifty and difficult but Mackie with his signature progressive fins free and aerial assaults, slashing and hacking his way to victory, out surfed the competition in the Under 21 Pro Junior Division.

The semi-final heat was indeed a nail biting finish with Mackie stuck in 3rd position for the entire heat and needing a 6.9 to advance. In the last ten seconds of the heat Bruce grasped a wave that would slingshot him into 1st position to advance into the final. In the final, Bruce got off to a good start holding 2nd place for the first ten minutes of the twenty-five minute final. He then found the wave he needed to control the heat and would earn him the 2012 Pro Junior title of the event.

In the Open Men’s division Bruce started out winning his first heat, defeating the 2011 defending champion, Francisco Bellorin from Venezuela, which sent his straight to Round 3, skipping a round. In round three Bruce was in 2nd place for the first half of the heat in advancing position. Then Rafael Perreira left him needing a 6 pointer score in order to advance. In the last minute Mackie would get a 5.9 score just barely missing out on advancing, as it was anyone’s game. Bruce finished in =7th in the Open Men’s Pro.

After having placed 4th in the final of the November Pro held in Barbados in 2011 and also competing in the Kona Pro in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, earlier this year, Bruce was currently in 9th position and this performance in Trinidad should better his overall standing in the series.

Mackie was overjoyed to win the Junior Pro in Trinidad, especially with his Grandad present, who was on his first surf trip with him, which meant the world to him!

Dane Mackie

Without a doubt, Barbados’ Top Junior Surfer Dane Mackie, demolishes the competition yet again. It is clear that the “force” to be reckoned with is without a doubt a true champion. The Barbados Surfing Association held it’s third and final Surfer of the Year Series event, at Soup Bowl, Bathsheba, on July 7th, 2012. The conditions were somewhat inconsistent with 4-5 foot swell, on the set, with onshore winds. Wave selection was critical.

The “LOST Enterprises”, “DIGICEL”, “JADA” and “Arnette” sponsored goofy footer tore up the “bowl” surfing on his backhand. Dane competed in four (4) divisions which kept him in the water most of the day with numerous back to back heats. Dane won every single heat he surfed in all four divisions and emerged the champion in all four finals!! He showed no signs of fatigue and his level of surfing remained at its highest, with his powerful radical carves, controlled floaters and big off the lip hacks.

Dane emerged the winner of all four divisions contested – Open, Under 21 , Under 18 and Under 16. His endurance, consistent energy level and competitive attitude together with his assault of manoeuvres produced an unbeatable combination!! Dane achieved these same results at the Barbados Surfing Association Surfer of the Year Event #1 which was held at Branden’s, Drill Hall, earlier this year. Once again, “Unstoppable” seems the most appropriate label for Dane Mackie! Well done.
