Buondi Caparica Pro set to start Friday
The Buondi Caparica Pro 2002 begins next Friday. Its the 15th contest for this years WQS tour and the third stop for the European professional tour, whose leader is, at the moment, Portuguese surfer Justin Mujica, with Caparica local João Antunes in third place.
This 1 star WQS event, with 10.000 dollars prize-money, will be located at CDS beach, home of Caparica Surfing Club (the second oldest surf club in Portugal, with 22 years on its credit) and International Surf Center, who are going to be the organizers for this event. Its the third time in a row that Costa de Caparica receives the Buondi Caparica Pro, second as a WQS.
Costa de Caparica is a small village, south of Lisbon, just right at the other side of the red bridge that crosses the river Tejo, known as the first Portuguese surf-city. The designation suits it well, because it still is one of the main sites for surfers around Portugals capital, with its more than 20 km of beach breaks and 9 jetties that support a lot of different swells. Also, it has quite a long history in Portuguese surfing, with several former national champions coming from here.
This year, CDS beach has two good sandbars and a medium size swell is expected from May 3rd to the 5th. With this in mind, a good show is also predictable during these three days, with almost every good European surfer coming for the event, along with some non-Europeans.
Besides the surfing contest, there will be a free Mega FM surf academy, for all the kids who want to try and learn how to surf; a VIP surfing contest, with some well-known TV faces competing among each other; and a lot of partys, with special attention for a live rock concert at the contest site, Saturday evening, at 06.30 pm, with the bands Fonzie and Helvis on Fire.
As organizers dont want to forget about the young ones, there will be a special contest between Portuguese junior surfers in this Buondi Caparica Pro 2002, as a form of promoting them. The four best at the WQS will compete in a special final, with 250 Euros of extra prize-money to their credit.
This years wild-cards will be 33 year old hot local Nuno Matta, former vice national champion and European top 16, always a danger on his waves, that he knows exceptionally well; and junior surfer Francisco Rodrigues, 19, vice national champion under 20 and open top 16, an athlete that has been maturing his surfing quite well and a really good competitor.
These are some of the ingredients for this years Buondi Caparica Pro, which is going to be held between May 3rd and 5th, on CDS beach, Costa de Caparica. Dont miss it cause the boys are back in town!
